Re: Explore Scientific Has Three New 82 Degree Eyepieces
Interesting. The focal lengths are too close to the existing ES82s to be practical. They will probably retire the older design

Does this mean there are new Nagler eyepieces coming out?

Re: Explore Scientific Has Three New 82 Degree Eyepieces
So, what's the real difference between the 82* 8.5mm and 8.8mm eyepieces? Only one millimeter of additional eye relief for the 8.5mm. Am I missing something here?
I own the 8.8mm, and it's an excellent eyepiece.

Re: Explore Scientific Has Three New 82 Degree Eyepieces
The previous eyepieces are on sale. Why should one buy the new ones when the older ones are on sale? Is 1mm more of eye relief worth the additional $50 ? I am always impressed that so many eyepiece (and telescope) vendors seem to make no attempt to actually explain why/how their products are better than their competitors, and/or how to choose intelligently from among the products they sell. Thus, the PRIMARY sources of information are, in effect, the online forums (such as this one).

* Celestron C6 SCT on a Twilight 1 Alt-Az mount

Re: Explore Scientific Has Three New 82 Degree Eyepieces
My guess is that they will discontinue the old line, and will have new 82 deg line. Patent issues, different manufacturer?

My guess is a different OEM has made them a better financial offer.

Re: Explore Scientific Has Three New 82 Degree Eyepieces
My 14, 11, 8.8, 6.7 and 4.7 are all gone anyway, replaced by Pentax XW 10, 7 and 5mm. But I did keep the 24mm and 18mm, which I still like. I can't see myself buying one of these. But agree, the older versions will likely be on the way out. If you have them, I couldn't see replacing them with the newer ones.

This development may explain why I've been waiting seven months for an ES 18mm.

That's ridiculous, you should not wait that long. On multiple occasions I have compared Meade 5000 UWA and ES82 side by side. They perform to the same level. Meade 5000 UWA 20mm new is about half price of ES82 18mm. There is also out production 1.25" Meade 5000 UWA 18mm - very nice performer in refractors and SCTs. I have enjoyed it for a couple of years until upgraded to Penatx XW.Shorty Barlow wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 9:12 pm This development may explain why I've been waiting seven months for an ES 18mm.

It is pretty ridiculous, although apparently I should be receiving it any day now. I'm not holding my breath lol.
