30-40mm eyepiece

#1

Post by Glenbo58 »

Wanting a better eyepiece to view deep sky obJects like M31 with my Celestron SCT.

A Televue is not in the cards price wise but are there any other kinds that are less expensive but give good quality wide field of view? My scope can accept a 2 in. eyepiece as well.
Lunt 102 ED, Celestron AVX, Orion Q70 38mm. Meade Super Plosl 26mm. Orthoscopic 18mm. Antaras Plossl 12.5mm.

Explore Scientific makes a 30mm in their 82* line - it runs for $350 - they are currently running a sale, but it is not one of the ones on sale, sadly.

I do not have that particular EP, but have the 18, 11, and 6.7 from the line and love them.

I do not know how it would perform in a SCT though. I suspect good - but do not know that for sure.

Do you currently own a Celestron .63 focal reducer, if not, get one it will take your f/10 scope down to an f/6.3. If your Celestron SCT is an edge design then the FR is a .7, still get one.

I have a C-tron 40mm 1.25 that was bundled with my C8 back in the last century. I don't use it since I deforked the OTA and put it in storage. I don't know if you'd be interested, but I've been thinking about selling it.

If it is in your price range Baader Aspheric 36mm is my favorite 2" EP and delivers great views in my 8" SCT (and other scopes I own as well :))

https://agenaastro.com/baader-36mm-hype ... piece.html

Otherwise, I would go with Erfle design like Orion Q70 or similar

https://www.telescope.com/catalog/searc ... eyword=q70

I had good experience with Antares Erfles in my 8" SCT. They are discontinued, but come out on used markets form time to time.

I just ordered an Orion Q70 38 mm. Cant wait to view M31 again when it comes. Not expecting the world, just an improvement.

That should work nicely with your telescope.
Hopefully the skies cooperate when it arrives.
