Baader Q-Barlow
I ask because I am putting together an observing newbie setup for a friend and saw this barlow and am hoping it is good value for the money.
Cheers

Re: Baader Q-Barlow
Yes, rarely, but when I do it works just fine. Quite decent. I really like the fact that it has the dual magnification factors that AREN"T a simple factor of 2. I usually use my 2 sets BCOs for binoviewing without. Occasionally I'll go monocular and just mount the Q-Barlow on one Q-turret and leave the other unbarlowed.
As for optical performance, it's my impression that it is better than others I have (Orion Shorty 2x, Televue 2" Big Barlow) and on a par with the TV Powermates (2" 2x, 4x) in my kit. Yes, it's that good. Disclaimer: I didn't arrive at this conclusion in a head to head shoot out. I've just let the Short and the Big fall informally into disuse.

Glad to hear that you are using Q-turret to, nFA. Have you tried binoviewing with two turrets? JK.notFritzArgelander wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 8:27 pmYes, rarely, but when I do it works just fine. I am, but your comments were all so good I decided I better have one for myself. Might as well get first-hand knowledge about this product. Plus the only Barlow I currently have is an El Cheapo.

Re: Baader Q-Barlow
That's the part that really intrigued me. Can't wait to give it a go.Bigzmey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 12:38 amGreat! The cell of Q-barlow can be removed from the body and screwed onEP for 1.3x factor. However, the threaded part is long. It works with simple designs like Orthos and Plossls, but will not fit more complex EPs with lens group before focus insideEP barrel.
Thanks

Re: Baader Q-Barlow
I've also used it with my TV-60 and it works well on that telescope too.
My favourite one is the Baader VIP Barlow, but that is far more expensive than the "Q" model.

Re: Baader Q-Barlow
The Baader VIP Barlow has been designed by Dr. Pudenz (Zeiss), for some special glass materials. It looks to me like a triplet.
It works very good with the Leica WW Aspheric Zoom, and it can be forced up to a factor of 2.5x
It may be the case, that the Baader VIP is the best choice for the wide and ultrawide eyepieces.
The third Barlow in my collection is the Nikon EiC 1.6x, a very fine piece of glass, manufactured with the typical Nikon precission.
Do I need the Barlows? I don't know for sure, but they belong to the EPs arsenal.
Best,
JG

Maybe it's just my impression, but I also found that the Baader VIP barlow sharpens the views delivered by the eyepiece without barlow. This has occurred to me on several eyepieces. For instance:
- I spotted on axis differences between Delos 12mm vs Docter 12.5mm, but these were nearly absent when the VIP barlow added
- My old Vixen SLV 5mm + VIP barlow 2x was just slightly behind my Vixen
- It also reduces the presence of astigmatism present in my Zeiss zoom 25-70x near the edge
In the past I also had the 2x Zeiss barlow, which in my opinion matched the VIP barlow in terms of optical quality. The two vastly differ in terms of versatility though.
I must say that my VIP barlow is largely modified:
1. the VIP element was removed from the 1.25" Baader nosepiece and installed into the adapter: Baader M43a x 0.75 / T-2a Adapter (e.g. for Takahashi) # 2458199
2. the adapter is screwed at the bottom of a 2" Baader nosepiece: Baader 2" nosepiece to T-2 / M48 # 2408150
3. On top of this I use either the standard VIP reducer or the Baader pushfix reducer: Baader Pushfix Reducer 2" to 1¼" # 2408151. The latter is lighter.
This allows me to use the VIP in 2" mode with my refractors and TeleVue paracorr2. As the VIP lens is always at the same distance below the focuser shoulder, it solves the large focus shift that the standard VIP can have when spacers are used.
Time to time I add a spacer ring in between.
With my zoom, I screw the 2" nosepiece directly to the Baader adapter used to enable that zoom for astronomy.

This configuration doesn't allow you to screw filters at the bottom.
I personally would not do that anyway as I screw them onto the nosepiece of my diagonal (refractor) or at the bottom of the televue paracorr2.

Piero,Piero wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 4:21 pm @j.gardavsky in my third photo, you can see the VIP element with its cell. Do you see those two holes? if you use a metal pin or one of the tools in a swiss pocket knife, you can turn and remove the VIP cell from the adapter. That's how you can move the VIP cell from the Baader T2-1.25 nosepiece and mount it into the Baader M43a x 0.75 / T-2a Adapter.
I know about these both holes.
Wanted just see, how you have mounted the assembly, very interesting.
Thanks,
