Celestron Ultima 24mm

#1

Post by MistrBadgr »

Just FYI. Don't know if this is the right place for this, but I know people who are interested in eyepieces look here. There is a Celestron Ultima 24mm in good condition for sale on eBay by 2ndhandrosee. The price is $118 or best offer. I cannot buy it and will not need it, but for me it is a groanner.

If it is the older Celestron Ultima 24mm $118 is to high a price. The Ultima Edge 24mm sells for almost $200 brand new. Images below are what the older Ultima is selling for at Astromart. Note the dates. Left click the images.

I thought the price was high also, but "make a best offer" is in place so it works more like an auction with the $118 being the "buy it now' price. Have no idea why it was done this way, but I checked out the store it was in and everything seemed to be done like that.

The 24mm Ultima is probably the hardest to find of the line. Has been that way since early 2000's. As a result it often goes for a premium, especially if in good condition. Looking back over old classifieds I found one sold in 2007 for $130 USD, and in 2020 for $200 USD. So in that context, $118 is a bit of a deal.

It's the only one I don't have in my set, I've been trying for years to get one here in Oz, but no luck.

It would not have lasted long at that price.

Some eyepieces go for crazy prices, originally a Zeiss Abbe II 34mm sold for $240.00(USD) now they typically sell around $2400.00(USD)
I have also seen two separate TMB Monocentrics listed for 850€ recently.

I can't remember precisely what is was, a collectors piece no doubt, sell on Astromart a few weeks back for $5K US. There was a huge discussion and speculation on the sidelines, but it sold rather quickly.

When you get into collecting (not using) prices can get astronomical really fast.

A set of Carl Zeiss ZAO II in box perhaps? There have been 4 that I know of in the last 1.5 years that have sold in that range and up.

No, it was a single eyepiece (I also don't remember what it was). And most people thought it was dramatically overpriced.
But note that there were 2 people interested.

Value is quite subjective, as too, obviously, is the amount of disposable income available.
I've seen an old car that sold originally for $50K, get sold for $1.5 million.
I bought the most expensive 4" Unitron refractor for $899 in 1970 and I saw one of the identical scopes recently sell for over $5K.
It looks like collectors will pay many times the new price for just about everything.

Currently using a 12.5" dob and a 4" apo refractor

Value of some astro products are quite subjective.
Eyepieces and telescopes well beyond their original price.

This telescope which is listed on the APM site has been for sale for over 6 years now: https://www.apm-telescopes.de/en/offers ... 10-mm.html
Very nice but I would not be paying that much for the pleasure of owning it.

I must be antique too... ;) When I was in single digits ages that very model was my ideal of a telescope. It was pictured in one of my astro books.

There is another one on Astromart that showed up. The lady selling it wants $150. I will watch and see how long that one lasts.

I just looked at Astromart for the Celestron Ultima 24mm that was listed for $150. It was gone. Listed for 2 days. I guess that says something about the value of a good specimen of that eyepiece. :)

Not surprising. It could be a long wait until the same out of production EP surfaces again, so if I am waiting for one to complete the set, I would not hesitate to pay a bit more.

I had similar issues when I was building my old TV Plossls smoothies set. Lower range 7.4 to 17mm would appear on the market quote often, but 21 to 40mm not so. I ended up buying the whole set and selling my partial collected piece by piece set.

I am beginning to think that about the Ultima 18mm. :) I looked back as far as I could on CN and AM to get an idea about how many a year show up. It is roughly about three. Hopefully, I can be patient and not wander off on a different tangent.
