Oh but there is also my dream eyepiece : the Pretoria 28mm comma corrected eyepiece that was designed in Pretoria South Africa and would go very well with my F4.5 Dobson.....but that is just a dream because they are very rare and expensive !

Well, not addicted, but I'm thinking about rationalizing what I have. I have 6-, 9-, and 15mm Orion Expanses that I'm going to sell. The 15 is my most used EP, but the threads are wonky, so filters don't screw on properly.

I have 10- and 6mm Vixen SLVs, so it would make sense to get an SLV 15, but I think they're being discontinued so availability might be a problem.

I have one AT 25-mm, so I might get a 15 to try since they're cheap. The 25 does an ok job IMO.

I have one ancient UO 12mm Plossl that I might sell as well as a 40mm Celestron Kellner. Not sure the Kellner is worth enough to bother listing it.

Haven't really considered any premium EPs. Maybe I'll try something in a year or so or if something fabulous goes on sale.

I bought my SLVs from eyepiecesetc.com for about $100 each on sale. They no longer list SLVs, so maybe that's why I was thinking they were discontinued. Looks like I'll have to pony up some more cash if I want one now. TBD.

Same hear, I have collected my set picking them one at the time on sale or used. I am sure they will go on sale again, Vixen has done spring sale a few years in a row.

Hi Piet,

Check this out: https://www.astrobuysell.com/au/propview.php?view=3869

Should be able to get them to ship to South Africa...

Good luck!

(PS: Just a thought. If they won't ship it to South Africa, send me a PM and I'll see if I can get it and ship it to you at cost. We "SA" people should stick together, even if we don't send our cricket team to you... ;) )

... and following the subject of the thread, I think I have all I need/want. (Horror!!!) Don't tell the accounts department though!
I even sold an Ethos 13mm in favour of my trusty Nagler 13T6. I might be tempted to look through a Docter 12.5, but I suspect I would still keep the Nagler instead.
I have built up a balance of eyepieces that work for me (see my signature). A lot of my favourites have green writing on them, and thanks to a very good Used site here in Oz, most of them have been less than 1/2 RRP.
I also have the ES 20mm 100°(which I rarely use because it is so big and heavy: my "grab and go" mounts don't like it!), a Parks 50mm plossl and a GSO 42mm "Superview", for those occasional widest-field views that we are prone to wanting at times, but they are really only used at really dark sky sites. (Not tempted by the Nagler 31mm hand-grenade. ;) )
Now that Pretoria looks tempting... (Just joking Piet: go for it!!! I'll make do with my 27mm Panoptic.)

I have been through a lot of different eyepieces over the years.

I have tended to prefer wide or ultra wide angle eyepieces and, yes, I would say that at times I have been rather addicted to collecting them !

I have, more or less, got things under control now although I still seem to have 2 eyepiece cases. With my largest scope (12 inch dobsonian) I use a 2 inch format set but with my refractors I prefer a 1.25 inch set.

Maybe I will be able to take a step futher towards sanity one day and amalgamate the 2 sets into 1 which will serve all my scopes !

Eyepieces have to match the optics. Some optics, esp slow f ratio instruments are more forgiving of optical design than others. You need to find the right eyepieces for your optical instruments. My 18" is an f5.5 Newt. The Naglers and the Denkmeiers both work well with this instrument and it's f5.5 ratio is the most pernickety with eyepieces.

My 6" f7 is also a Newt but at f7 is much more forgiving. It is a visual newt, 3.5% diagonal and only takes 1.25" eyepieces. The 40mm Kellner, although it has a narrow AFOV, it gives a 1.3 degree TFOV 26X and a 5.7mm exit pupil in my 6"f7. Not sharp to the edges but a fantastic deep sky sweeping eyepiece. There are very few 40mm eyepieces in 40mm barrels. Geometry rules!

I think I shop at the same Australian 2nd hand site as Dean D (Lost in Space) and likewise pick up 2nd hand eyepieces at 50-75% off RRP. I have built up my eyepiece collection over the past 43 years. So that's 1 eyepiece every 3.5 years - probably not an addiction. :Astronomer1:

Excluding cheap plossls that came included with some small telescopes, my observing set is

2 inch
All these acquired over the past 5 years
42mm GSO SV
31mm Nagler
17mm Nagler
12mm Nagler

1.25 inch
Denkmeier's acquired last year, ES & Nagler 3- 5 years ago, Konig 20 years ago, Unitron and Meade's in the 1970's
40mm Unitron Kellner (yes - you read right!)
25mm Meade Orthoscopic
21mm Denkmeier
16mm University Optics König
14mm Denkmeier
12mm Meade Orthoscopic
11mm ES 82 deg
7mm Nagler

5mm still lookin'
I have a Meade Series 4000 and a Baader Hyperion in 5mm focal lengths. Both ok but not stunning.
Having tried a friends 5mm Pentax XW, I think I'm going to sell the other two and buy a Pentax.
Both Meade and Baader have low light transmission compared to the Pentax.

Most used
31mm, 17mm and 7mm Naglers
21mm and 14mm Denkmeiers

The Cull
I think I'm eventually going to sell the ES11mm, Nagler 12, and the two 5mm eyepieces

The Wish List
5mm Pentax XW
Either 10mm Pentax XW or 9mm Nagler T6

Love your collection Joe! Not sure about the website "Lost in Space"... ;)

I have got some pretty good eyepieces from "Ice in Space" though... (including an 11mm ES, 9mm T1 Nagler, 27mm Panoptic, 3-6mm Nagler zoom, 18 and 25mm Fujiyama orthos and 50mm Parks plossl). I have been tempted by the occasional Denkmeier too: and there is a 12.5mm Docter there right now... My 42mm GSO SV and 13mm T6 Nagler were new buys though. (The Nagler was when we had parity with the $US.)

Browsing astro classifieds is bad. You buy EPs even if you did not plan to. I was looking for Vixen SLVs and somehow ended up with Pentax XW 3.5mm.

Re: What Are Your Future Eyepiece Plans, And Are You Addicted To Buying Eyepieces?

Most of my scopes and eyepieces were bought on the used market. With eyepieces it can be a good way to try something out and then move it on with little or no loss if it does not suit.

Many years ago I found that I really liked wide fields of view so that has proved quite expensive over the years.

While I used to enjoy using eyepieces such as abbe orthoscopics and supermonocentrics I've found that I'm happy to compromise slightly on pure optical performance in return for comforts such as a wider field of view, longer eye relief and a nice big eye lens. Must be getting old !
I'm a visual observer based in the South West of England.

A friend of mine may have an addiction problem buying premium eyepieces and eyepiece accessories. He is however a great friend to have when you want to try out a premium eyepiece on your own scope prior to buying it.

His keepers include:
Televue Naglers : 31, 26, 22, 17, 2 x13, 2 x9
Televue Panoptic: 2 x 24
Televue Delos: 14, 10
Takahashi LE’s: 50, 40, 30, 18, 12.5, 7.5, 5
Denkmeier: 2 x 21, 2 x 14
Pentax XW’s: 20, 14, 7, 5

The eyepieces that he has doubled up are for his binoviewer.

I am thinking about staging an intervention and seizing the eyepieces and holding them for safe keeping until we get his habit under control.

What do you think?
