My New 42mm Eyepiece Is On The Way To Me

#1

Post by Refractordude »

Currently my widest field eyepiece is the GSO Superview 30MM, which I really like. This GSO Superview 42mm will give me a brighter, and wider view. There is some controversy about this eyepiece's field of view, but nFA cleared that up for me. Will try it out soon after arrival.

Nice new addition to the collection! Enjoy the "floating in space" effect.

Sorry to say, but I will be returning the GSO Superview 42mm back to Agenaastro. It gives a wider view than the GSO Superview 32mm. However, only sharp out to the edge at about 75 percent. So the wider view is lost. It could be that I got a bad one.

Sorry to hear you got a lemon. Mine does much better than that at f7 or slower.

No, it is not defective. It is hard to make low power wide field 2"EP without edge aberrations. Some people are more sensitive to them than others. Also the result will vary in different scopes designs.

The strategy is to try a few with your eyes and your scopes and see which deliver the least distractive view.

Orion Q70/Agena SWA 38mm and William Optics SWAN 40mm are of modified Erfle design and some people in some scopes like them better than GSO SV.

Another option in the same price range to consider is 2" 56mm Plossl. It will give you the same actual field of view as ~40mm ~70deg wide field, but the FOV in Plossl will be much flatter. The down side is that it will produce larger exit pupil.

If you want better corrected glass you would have to step up in price considerably. ES68 40mm is considered a well corrected EP. But in addition to high price it is also weights a ton.

I found the happy middle ground for myself in Baader Hyperion-Aspheric 36mm. However, it is not for everyone. EPs are very personal. :)

I like to keep my eyepieces close to the same weight. I use a 2" barlow with my "1.25 eyepieces to maintain the same weight. It really is a pain to have to rebalance my scope. Looks like I will end up with the Baader 36mm Aspheric. The Vixen LVW 42mm may be to heavy. For now I am really happy with my GSO Superview 30mm.
