Adapter for Accommodating Different Sized Plug-in Eyepieces

#1

Post by Faith wirh Reason »

I know this forum is full of clever and experienced people, and thus it's with some trepidation I ask a question which many will think ,''Mmm what school did he go to, if any'' I jest, I know eveyrbody means well on this website. Although semi-retired, i still treat everyday as a school day, no one is ever too old to listen and learn.
Now to the problem:

I have a Zeiss Telmator that accepts 0.965" plug in eyepieces , I reckon that's an outside diameter of 24.5 mm. I have acquired some microscope eyepieces , in particular the Leitz Periplan 10x/18 No. 519749. This eyepiece comes with an external diameter of 23.2 mm giving a shortfall in diameter of 1,3 mm ( my estimate).

Question:
Can a sleeve be obtained to make up the difference in diameter?

A 35 mm plastic film canister just won't do, it doesn't fit anyway, On the otherhand, a made to measure stainless steel sleeve , whilst not impossible financially, seems slightly over the top.
Does anyone have any good advice on the matter -most appreciated.

Regards,

Ian Lamont. :observer:

Wrap a turn or two of electrical tape around the barrel.

Yes, it would work, but no, that solution is a bit Heath Robinsonish for me . I well know the perils of sticky stuff, okay for an emergency but not really a long-term solution.

Yes, that's definitely worth thinking about. I know the principles behind the process, but not too sure about the finished product in terms of material used and it's longevity, does it disintegrate with the passage of time or exposure to U.V?

I believe it will not last as long as a metal adaptor, but with good care should last for a few years.

Talk to Jim at ScopeStuff

http://www.scopestuff.com/index.html#Visual%20Adapters

He may have one already, if not they can machine you one.

A few folks on this forum are using microscopic EPs, let's wait for them to chip in.

ATC (Astro Telescope Company) in Czech Republic still makes eyepieces in this size as well as 0,965", 1,25"and 2".
Maybe email them and see if they have adapters available. http://www.atc-astro.eu/eshop/

Teleskop-Service and APM Telescope in Germany may also know where to get proper adapters if they do not sell them.

You may be able to wrap the barrel in card stock depending on thickness.

** I just found an adapter of 23,2mm to 31,75mm at ATC if that would work for you.
