Where do you keep your eyepieces?

#1

Post by mcolbert »

Earlier today I was thinking about starting another DIY effort and converting a Pentax case into an EP case. But then I thought what do I need a case for if I don't travel - I just tend to be in the backyard so everything is moved from the 'decrepit' workshop. ;). So then I thought I just as well might keep the lenses in wooden boxes. I have several types of foam to play around with and I begun to search for some wooden ones on eBay etc. It seems to be the better option for me, but my question (at long last), is what do others use to store and carry their EPs?

Below are a few EPs in the type of (wooden) box I intend to store the others in. (But not the exact same box, they are somewhat scarce. :). )

Very nice.

I have more eyepieces than the law should allow. Those not currently used are stored in what I call my "Sock Drawer"... a roll-around Craftsman tool box dedicated to astro equipment. However, my general set of eyepieces travel with me in a custom case made by Wood Wonders...
https://www.wood-wonders.com/eyepiece/

Drawers on each side that slide out and adjustable, red LED lighting make it the "one-stop-shop" for just about anything I'll need scope-side.

I have two aluminum cases for eyepieces. One case has pluck foam and contains my wide-field selection used primarily with my dobsonian. The other case contains Plossl and ortho eyepieces and things for use with my refractors. No foam here, so these eyepieces are all in bolt cases. I’ve got the foam, just haven’t made the time to pluck.

I have yet another case of the same same that holds a Telrad and Rigel Quickfinder various other bits and bobs such as batteries, red lights, filters, and some small tools in case I need to tighten down something loose or loosen something tight.

Yet another case with astro cams, extensiion tubes, guide scope, cabling.

Too many cases...

I keep my eyepieces in a wooden box which actually is an old microscope case. Sits on a shelf in the living room. I usually gather the eyepieces I expect to use for the evening and set them outside on my observing table. When I have finished a session I put them back. Easy Peasy.

I have an aluminum harbor freight tool case I have outfitted with pluck foam.
I need another case. :-)
I like the classy look of these wooden cases here.

John...this looks like a sewing box that I made for my daughter. Unfolding layers...nice. I may have to revisit my EP strategies. :-)

Thank you mcolbert for this thread.

I have added another half dozen not in this image...I have a rare Eyepiece disease. "Oculartomanycum" :-)

Currently this is my main eyepiece case. It is a MTM 30 caliber ammo can. This isn't all of my eyepieces. I have some in my pack that I take out and the ones that I just got with my new scope are still with it. I use MTM ammo cans for my other astronomy paraphernalia also. They stack up nice together. This 30 cal can stacks nice with their 50 cal can.

As I think I wrote above, my preference for boxes (apart from the wood) is that I don't have to travel to a dark site,, if I did, I would certainly go with cases. I now have to find another use for the Pentax case though. ;(

Pluck foam plastic Apache case from Harbor Freight. Very cheap compared to "astronomy" cases. I admit that wooden cases can be beautiful items in and of themselves though.

I have a five year old Orion case with pluck foam with a broken handle. I also have a Pelican hard case but for some reason, haven't migrated to it, so it sits collecting dust while I continue the old Orion case. Go figure.

The Harbor Freight case seems to win it! I have one also which I have already re-plucked. I probably didn't need to include the bolt cases plus the protection of the case on some of them! :D Sometimes I tend to overdo it!

I also found a Plano Protector case for $4 at a Goodwill store that I also re-plucked.

The top eggcrate foam is a little too thick but holds the eyepieces and accessories really snug. I have added a few more items in each case since these photos were taken but still have lots of room for more.

I use a combination of aluminium, wood and HPRC cases.
Some eyepiece sets have factory wooden cases like mcolbert ZOA II case, aluminium cases for viewing at home and local outreach and HPRC for when travelling.
