Page Reload with Thanks/Like Button

#1

Post by GCoyote »

Are there any other options in phpBB for this button?

a) Waiting for the page to reload after every 'thanks' makes me lose my place and slows down reading the helpful posts so many members make. Very annoying on mobile.

b) [and much less important] if a non-member is perusing the site, all those little 'thumbs down' icons make it look like we have a massive amount of hate and discontent here when nothing could be further from the truth! On most sites, the icon simply changes from 'outline' to filled in or some similar unobtrusive indication.

Probably not at the top of your to-do list but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Clear Skies!

Unconfirmed opinion alert!

I think the thumbs down will only appear to you on your logon as the one who clicked the thumbs up icon. Non-members won't see a thumbs down.

I think I'll log off and check my theory, probably should have done that first!

If you hover your mouse over the thumbs up it shows "Say thanks to the author of this post : posters name".
Once you have thanked the author the thumb turn upside down and now reads "Remove your thanks : posters name".

As Graeme has noted this feature is only visible when logged in.

I also use my cell a lot for the forums and you will not see the messages since there is no pointer to hover over the thumbs with.
When using my cell and chrome it only shows a single block with three dots in it, "clicking" on that opens a drop down menu and that says "Thanks" or "Remove thanks".
Eyeballs, binoculars, sketch box, Scopes n stuff.

It appears you might be using a slow system. I clocked the response time for clicking the 'Thanks' button and it's less than one second. I will try it on my older Ipad and see if there's any difference.

I dont mind the refresh so much except when you have typed a lengthy reply then think 'Oh I forgot to say thanks' and poof there goes your lengthy reply.

Although the delay is less important than interruption, I often thank several people in a given thread for helping me with my questions. That means a several requests to reload the same page.

Also I think the network lag is a bigger factor than system speed. My 8 year old Samsung tablet is only a bit slower than my new Dell PC. I don't think you can do anything about that.

Thanks for at least looking at it. :text-thankyouyellow:

Well,

After putzing with the like button (and crashing part of it) I decided to go back to the one I know works.

It appears it still does the page refresh (that is really a phpBB software issue and not the 'Thanks' button). However it does appear to take you back to the correct location in the topic.
