Timed out ?

Post by Solsearcher »

I am by no means fast at typing and it can sometimes take me a while to compose a message . Today I made a lengthy post about how I do my imaging and when I went to submit it I was taken to a page to sign in again . I signed back in and my message was gone .......... any way to recover it ?

The browser back button will get you there if you do it straight away.

Hope it's not too late!

Ah bad luck on the message, we all do it from time to time. When my message gets a bit long , and they do , as I tend to dribble on.... I select the message and copy it , you can then paste it back if you lose it or paste it to a notepad....
Only a few weeks ago I trusted googles advice to alter my registery to solve a problem, and now a few hundred dollars later I was quiet surprised to find what I hadn't backed up and lost....
Good luck Phill.

Sorry, I don't have a set figure. @Gordon might know, he's my guru!

Sound advice Phill. I often Select all and Copy (Ctrl A Ctrl C) half way through a post when I'm jumping from tab to tab!

I feel your pain Mike. That has happened to me a few times (not on here but elsewhere), learning the hard way.

When writing long posts now though I also do frequent copies to the clipboard, then paste them into Notes on my Mac. It is a quick and easy backup if for any reason you lose your original unfinished posting.

As Graeme suggested, pressing the Browser back button should usually work, but not always it seems :sigh:

The "editing" time limit was set to 30 minutes. I have extended that to 90 minutes. Hopefully that helps.

With that said, I agree, it's much better to use an different program to create your topic if you know it's going to be a long one.

My favorite way of writing a long topic / article is to use my Gmail on my smartphone so I can dictate the whole thing. No more typing just talking. I then send it to myself (if I want to post from my laptop), edit it and then copy and paste that into my post here on TSS. What used to take 30 minutes of typing now it takes just 10 minutes of talking and editing.

Cheers,
JT

I don't think extending the editing window helps here, because it required logging in.
If the sending fails due to the editing window expiration, you can return to the text with the return-button and copy the text. If the session closes, I think the session data may be lost, and the back-button may not work.

A way to keep the session going, is to let the server see, that you are there. Maybe open another window, and move from page to page every once in a while. The server doesn't see your typing. That happens locally on your machine. The server only sees the "submits".

Yes I use an external program for long posts. Don't worry about too much formatting (coloured text, italics etc) as when you copy and paste it in that all goes away - unless there is a magic trick I am not aware of (very likely). You can use the "Full editor" to put some of it back though.

Some formatting you can do with HTML.
Like I often use

Code: Select all
and
Sometimes
and
for bolding
this is a quote with some bolding

Code: Select all

The [something] starts the thing and [/something] ends it
