Introducing myself, new to this forum

#1

Post by AstroProfSmith »

Greetings,

I stumbled across this forum through an internet search, as I am having some rather odd problems with a Meade LX-200, and I was looking for places where people might discuss such things. This seems like a great resource in general, so I thought I'd stick around.

To introduce myself, I'm a professor of Physics and Astronomy at a small liberal arts college in North Carolina. I got a PhD in Astrophysics from MIT in 1999, studying X-ray Binaries and Gamma-Ray Bursts, but I also do visual astronomy for fun, and I've been teaching classes in telescope observing since... 97, I think? I fell in love with astronomy as a kid -- my school district had a planetarium, and elementary school kids could go there after school once a week as part of a "gifted program" (I heard a few years ago they can't do that program any more because of liability issues. Ah, the 70s...).

Anyway, at my current college we have a 16" RCOS in a 20' Observadome that's *almost* fully automated, a Meade 10" that's on a Losmandy mount (we're in the middle of getting it set up with a spectrometer) in a SkyShed POD, four 8" Meade LX-200s, a Celestron NexStar8 with the AutoAligner gadget, and a bunch of other odds and ends. We're in Urban Greensboro, so not exactly a dark sky site. About three miles from an airport and five miles from the downtown area. Light pollution is pretty bad, but we are primarily a teaching facility.

So, I have lots of experience, but I also consider myself to be forever learning more, so I look forward to sharing ideas and questions with you folks!

Yours,

Don Smith

Welcome! You will certainly be a great asset here and I trust that we can provide you with a reciprocal engagement.

Best Regards,

PS. I worked as a lab aide at a community college (Lansing, Michigan) about 200 meters from the State Capitol, which was always lit up. And yet, we had a telescope under a dome. You make do with what you have.
