The village where I live now is surrounded by skiing areas.
There is about 30 within 5-45 minutes of driving.
And minutes within the first sighting of bears?
(Read an article where parts of Slovakia are now knee deep in bears)

There is quite a few in the surrounding area but usually there are very few incidents but recently things have gotten a bit crazy.
At the moment there are videos of a bear running down a street chasing people.
Liptovský Mikuláš where this occurred is approximately 50 km away.

My guess is that the bears can hunt anyone they like, no permit required... ;)

They do not even ask for permission! Quite rude of them.

There is no legal hunting of the bears though there is a yearly cull of 30-35 by the government.
There are currently between 1500- 2500 bears in Slovakia now, the cull has not kept up with their increase.
Bears were hunted almost to extinction in the 1930 and have been protected since.
In 2021 the first person killed by a bear in Slovakia in well over a century occurred and there are between 3-5 people injured by bears yearly but no deaths until last week.

Those are about the same stats for people being killed by a kangaroo in Australia. One in 2022, and the previous one was 1936... :o

Went for a visit with the Mid Kent Astronomical Society to the Royal Astronomical Society library today.

This is Sian the RAS Librarian who gave us an excellent presentation of some of the books. The bloke in the picture on the wall is Francis Baily of Baily's Beads fame.

This is an early publication of the Claudius Ptolemy Almagest

Here's a book describing the spherical nature of planet Earth by Johannes De Sacrobosco from 1482.

An early example of multicolour printing, I think it's a Tycho Brahe publication, from memory!

This one is Tycho Brahe: Astronomiae Instauratae Mechanica from 1602

This is a second edition of the Nicolas Copernicus De Revolutionibus (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) from 1566. In which Copernicus first proposed his heliocentric theory.

And Isaac Newton's Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica from 1687.

Other works were presented too. It's a bit mind blowing to ponder who has been to this library over the years. A great day was had by all!

I just saw some type of fireball in the sky, white with green color, thought it was a crashing plane over Lakehurst Military Airfield, NJ (Where the Hindinburg burned).
About 9:30 EDT
Haven't heard anything on the news.

Couple days of bike riding in Wisconsin. I was able to see the Milky Way there without binos or a scope. What a concept...
