This evening, when it was - and still is - cold enough, I tried to do some tests to the newly fixed CEM120.
Didn't go well. When I started, around 11 PM (23:00 for Europeans ), it was -9°C (16°F).
Of course I didn't remember to check the coordinates and time first.
Then polar alignment.
Then one star alignment... well no. It wasn't even in the "hood". Tried to use Pollux, but the tube pointed somewhere in Cancer. I tried to wrestle, but the problem won - I didn't get it aligned - not even to the right constellation.
Nice way to spend some hours out in the night, right?
At around 2 AM (-11°C, 12°F) I decided to haul everything back in. Have to look into it later.
Even if there was a sound, like grains of sand somewhere in the mount gears, I think the problem is in the settings.
When I tried to star-align using Pollux, the RA actually run PAST it!? Weird.

Re: What have you been up to lately?
Got a photo tripod padded bag that fits my 102 and my 120 OTAs. But. I have to take the finders off or let them stick out. Not sure that's a good idea and not sure I want to spend time realigning the finders if I go out to the club site for a short bit. However, my Manfrotto 475B fits quite well, so maybe it stays a tripod bag.

Taken finders off for trips is a good safety practice. I do it every time I go on dark site trips. With practice it does not take that long to re-align them.pakarinen wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 1:47 pm Got a photo tripod padded bag that fits my 102 and my 120 OTAs. But. Or perhaps a bit of stiff cardboard over the finder if there is enough room in the bag.Bigzmey wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 8:57 pmTaken finders off for trips is a good safety practice. Re: Lens suggestions / new scope
I now have, seven Nerite, six Trochus, six Turbo, one Nassarius, and seven Cerith snails added a week ago. I also have a few Scarlet Hermit crabs. The image is of the Cerith snails. It is good to have a variety of inverts since each has a cleaning specialty. Now that my clean up crew is in place it is time to add some fish.

Sidenote: I used to frequent a marine aquarium forum when I had tanks and there was a person who lived in south Florida who collected all his specimens himself while snorkeling. Aside from saving a bundle of money, I always thought that was way cool. And no need for Instant Ocean when you can bring buckets of the real stuff home from offshore.

You have to be careful where you get your sea water from. Close to shore it is full of parasites and pollutants! Also the occasional pistol shrimp Larvie can get in there and wreak havoc!
Honestly your safer with Instant Ocean.

Yeah, this guy got his water from well offshore to avoid pollutants - had his own boat. Don't recall the details of what kind of filtering / sterilizing he did.

Re: What have you been up to lately?
Until the weather warms up and I can get the door and windows in the new "den" installed, I'm working on a frock coat and pants for my US Civil War re-enactment/portrayal of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy. Old clothes patterns leave a lot to be desired. I'm using a muslin cloth - 'cause its cheap and will help me figure out the final dimensions before I commit to expensive "Italian Wool" which was all the rage in the 1860s. BTW Italian Wool is what today we would call standard men's suit material. It was fairly new at the time because it wasn't the heavy duty wool most clothes were made of. Typically only the fairly wealthy could afford it. And Welles was a wealthy man having been in the newspaper business and Postmaster-General for Connecticut.
I've made several mistakes so it's good to be using muslin as who cares if I have to rip out a seam or two or three?

Anybody ever catch a Snakehead fish? Things are starting to warm up for fishing. Was at the Walmart this afternoon and picked these lures for better luck with the Snakehead. I heard the fish taste better than wild Salmon. Here is an image of the fish and a little history.

Recovering from a bout of Covid (or something like it...) that my lovely daughter seems to have given to me... :p
The cloud gods have descended with all their might and muster anyway... I think the 4" refractor purchase, topped off with a 6x30RA finder AND just yesterday the arrival of a lovely Geoptik refractor bag to store the refractor in has finally tipped them off...
I've just started reading "The Light Hearted Astronomer Observes Again" by Ken Fuller on Kindle... I should probably be studying and writing an assignment for my MSc but my head hurts...

I did a bad, bad thing.

I drink tea, I read books, I look at stars when I'm not cursing clouds. It's what I do.

Re: What have you been up to lately?
Yet another wasted evening trying to get the CEM120 goto aligned. It used to be so easy. After polar alignment, just one star goto alignment, a little correction to get the star in the middle, and that's it. Now the star is not even in the view of the 26 mm 70° eyepiece. Got to check from the finder where it is and adjust as long as the star is in the middle of the 26 mm eyepiece view and press OK, to get complaints of too big errors, and at least 3-star alignment is needed. Unfortunately most of those stars that were given as additional stars, were not visible. For the 3rd star there was no useful alternative.
I checked the location, date and time settings probably 5 times. What the heck they did to it in Germany?
Too tired to start writing to them today. Maybe tomorrow...
