Retired again!

I finished my one year contract at the Australian National University, six weeks ago. I'm still doing a little work on coauthoring a couple of research papers with some anthropologists from another university who sent me some human teeth for isotope analyses. We can pull some information about their diets from the isotope signatures. The old saying, "you are what you eat," is truer than you think.

Last week, I bought a new conical burr coffee grinder, Mmmm coffee.

Got home from California last late night (or rather early this morning). The wedding was great and my speech which I delivered via microphone to the audience of around 150 people was fine and got a nice reception. Ride on Southwest was a bit bumpy due to turbulence off the coast of Oregon. New plane though - 737 Max8. There was a baby in the seat in front of me but she didn't make a peep until we landed. I managed to squeeze in visits to both my favorite authentic burrito joint and also my favorite pizza restaurant while I was down there.

It sounds like there was a crazy amount of rain with the storm: New York looked pretty soggy in the news feeds.

Sorry to hear about the need for a new roof. Maybe you can get a slide-off one! ;)

I ordered a TeleGizmos 365 cover to hopefully fit my biggest scopes on my Skywatcher mount. It will have to work until I can get my observatory once we buy a house.

My usual one-hour drive home last night took three hours. Bad accident on the interstate - tanker truck, probably a couple cars, and a motorcycle that was folded in half with a helmet sitting on the pavement. I don't think there was a good outcome.

could not sleep on tuesday so got up really early 3am , was sitting outside drinking some coffee and my little 90 Mak was looking at me , so I had a look at Jupiter , I normally only look in winter here in RSA , I have a cheap 20mm eyepiece in more as a dust shield but the view was great , so grabbed some better eyepieces , 15mm view was sharp , so tried my luck with a 9mm and was still perfect took a chance with a 6.3mm view was ok , well the best for this scope since I got it , probably close to my 8inch Dobs
I then Tried Orion Nebula with the 15mm was nice , by this time around 5am the wife comes out , what is going on here
I then decided to get some bigger scopes which took time as seeing conditions must be great , but by the time I got my act together it was getting lighter and gave up
So one never knows when the conditions are at their best

If it's cloudy in the evening here and I decide to try to sleep in the next morning, I can pretty well assume it will be clear by 0300.
The exception is if it's pouring down rain at 2200. That tends to stick around a bit longer usually. But not always.

Unfortunate and strange. Normal procedure is to take the helmet with the patient. A helmet gives good indications of head injuries.

I was doing about the same thing, 23:00 EDT here in the states. Also using a 90mm Mak I picked up over the summer.

So as I mentioned, I was using a 2nd hand 90 mm Mak. The controller uses a 9v battery which I removed and put in my pocket while I was cleaning it. Unfortunately I'd put a few two inch long steel screws in that same pocket earlier in the day. The combination made for an exciting few minutes!

I've been sick with this nasty virus going around. It hit me hard and fast two weeks ago, tested myself for Covid and was negative. Went to Urgent care, tested for Covid and negative again. Long story short, still sick with no energy to do anything including observing through the telescope, and the sky here is perfect for observing right now. I WAS able to take a 60mm refractor focuser apart and strip the old grease off and regrease with Super Lube synthetic grease. Can't wait to feel better.

I am recovering from minor surgery almost 2 weeks ago. It was performed by an autonomous robot and went well AFAIK, after one night in the hospital they sent me home. The recovery normally takes 3 to 4 weeks. In the meantime, I am not allowed to lift anything above 15 lbs. or do strenuous exercise. Last Monday I hiked Gaviota Peak nevertheless, perhaps not the brightest idea. I feel perfectly normal, just have to be careful to let the innards recover. I am not going to open and close the roof of the observatory for a while. Meanwhile I've started working on the DSS source code where I would like to see some live stacking and editing improvements. I managed to build it and am studying to see how it works. At least that I can do.
