When I was in the RAAF I remember talking with some crew members of an RAN Grumman Tracker aircraft about their spotlight. I think it had a 20" mirror, and they claimed it could burn through a steel plate at 200 feet. Probably not good if you were in a life-raft waiting to be found and rescued!
The Grumman wasn't known for its powerful engines, so I asked if the aircraft would stop when they turned the light on. The Navy boys weren't amused...
