I have lived within driving distance of Niagara Falls for 28 years now; it's about 140KM (86 miles) away from where I live. Even for what it is, it's never been a big deal for me really. But thanks to my work, I got to see it for the second time ever last Wednesday, Jan 15th  And that was only because I took a wrong turn off of Stanley Ave, I was actually heading for Fort Erie. I ended up on the corner of Fallsview Blvd and Livingstone Street. Fallsview goes into a dead-end with the most no parking signs on one road I've ever seen, so I pulled over, parked, and took a few shots which I later stitched together in MS ICE :D
Niagara_stitch_s.png

Just for fun, I also took a look in Google Maps satellite view, and that white concrete road barrier on the bottom left of the shot shows up in it too  Niagara Falls

All the best,
Mark

I just came across this thread which I think is great.

i have dabbled (and never with great skill) in photography for many years through old B&W with my father in the 70s, through SLR's, the first point and shoot digital cameras all the way to current megapixel DSLR's. But I am constantly surprised by the quality of image that can come out of todays Smart Phones.

Below are two which I particularly like from my Samsung Galaxy S9

Im going to dig out some other images from my files and put them up here later.

Here'a a pic I took in a park in the Kitchener area on Sunday. I took this before I hit the wooden palette with my pickup truck on the highway at 80mph (130kph), that would've been the better picture

All the best,
I'm trying to decide if that is a large bird in one of the branches in the opening on the right hand side - looks pretty large if it is. I'd love to see a crop of that area.

During the current heat wave, I've been keeping a makeshift birdbath / drinking reservoir for native birds. This week has been hot and Fri/Sat especially brutal. It was 41.5C (107F) outside both days. :flame: :flame: :flame:

This red wattlebird came in about 15 times yesterday, stayed 15-20 mins each time to drink and cool off. The sulphur crested cockatoos came in mornings and evenings.

Poor things seem to do that rapid breathing with beaks open when they're overheated. I've seen magpies, wattle birds and cocky's all doing it. They seem to take a drink then breathe rapidly I guess so that the evaporation of their "wet whistle" cools them down. This same bird has spent most of the day camped on my patio except when the big bully cocky scares it away. I can recognise this one by the pattern of white feathers on its tail. It's bad enough inside today, would hate to be out there with them.

These photos all shot through glass door so as not to disturb them.

Went down the Kings Highway with a friend yesterday and checked out some of the fire grounds. No, we weren't travelling from Castle Black to Kings Landing, just Canberra to Batemans Bay.

We didn't take any pictures of the many damaged or destroyed houses out of respect for those affected, just a some of national park and state forest fire grounds. Some tree species are burnt to a cinder while others seem unaffected. Some species have already sprouting green shoots and pixie on the ground.

The rate of recovery, is astounding. Fire went through here on December 31. The regrowth on some trees is impressive. Others may never recover.

Joe

Thanks for sharing that Joe. That must have been a heartbreaking road-trip.

The coverage of the fires has been extensive in the UK and Irish press and I've read a lot about how quickly life is returning to those areas but is is difficult for use over here to really appreciate the scale of the devastation. You pictures give a real perspective.

I was fascinated by a report on BBC of how some giant slugs had survived because they were hidden away in cracks because it was already hot and dry before the fires started

I loved your bird pictures higher up - Its hard to imagine having Sulpher Crested Cockatoos coming into your garden for those of us for whom a Blue Tit is the most we can expect!

He worked on this attempt at the feeder for quite some time and was utterly unsuccessful. He kept his hind feet hooked to the tree bark and when he got frustrated swung himself back down to the tree.
It was very entertaining to watch.😊

Beautiful images, how do you rate that new Sigma lens? I am thinking about purchasing this very lens.

Hi Ian,
sorry for the late reply, been away for a while.
Regarding the Sigma, the more I use it the more I like it :)
I also tried on the moon with the sigma 1,4 multiplier single shoot no processing.
