It is a Peacock butterfly, although the colours are not quite that vivid in real life!

At one time I never saw them in my garden, but now they are perhaps the most numerous species.

Hello Dean,

the color rendition depends on the surrounding light.
Taking this photo, I have shielded away the direct sunshine, this lets the color nounaces to come better, and made a high key camera setting.

Happy to see that your wife likes this butterfly,
JG

PS: Otherwise, this has bee a pretty big, butterfly, covering the whole Tagetes blossom

A couple of shots from a recent (last week) trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Aust.

These are yellow-footed rock wallabies. They were nearly extinct in the area, but have been protected and are making a come-back. They are only about 6-10kg in size.
Mum and bub1.jpg
I didn't realise she had a joey until I blew up the image: she was high up on the cliff face.
Mum and bub2.jpg
This one was a lot closer, but the joey was shy...
Mallee ringnecks.jpg
- and these are some local "Mallee Ringneck" parrots. The male is the more colourful one on the left.

... and a couple more
Rock wallabies making up.jpeg
These are youngsters (about the size of a large domestic cat) who were playfully chasing each other: one actually jumped on top of the other's head just after this. Here they are in "kiss and make up" mode. They can move very quickly across the cliff/rock face.
Two Euros.jpg
... and these are larger kangaroos called "Euros" (not the currency!) or "Wallaroos" as they are about mid-way between a small "wallaby" and the largest "kangaroos": up to around 40kg in size. This is a Mum and teenage child. The youngster made a curious whistling grunt when I got too close (about 20m away), and they took off.

We have just seen the end (hopefully!) of a prolonged drought in this area, and the biggest kangaroos and Emus are still on the way back, so there aren't many around yet; they headed south during the drought. The really big kangaroos can stand nearly 2m tall and weigh up to 90kg: you don't want to argue with a big male!

Just walked outside after 7 pm and looked West and was greated by a lovely dark blue sky with the the Moon, Venus, Spica , and Mercury. So I just grabbed a few quick shots with my Sony Digital.

Hi Phill. Wow, this is a beautiful nightscape image. Very good framing, exposure, a wonderful group of nice targets in alignment, and excellent foreground too. Thanks for sharing this with us Phill and keep up the great work.
