Re: The Great Photography Thread - REVIVED!
Hi all. I have been wanting to get this shot for several days now. Nice sunshiny day so I went for it. But, my wife had already left for a breakfast with the girls, so I was by myself. It was difficult to feed everybody with a camera hanging down from my neck, and getting the choreography and framing just right. Missing from this photo is a second squirrel, "Bugs", our backyard bunny, and the blue jays, but sometimes they wait till the others have gone to scavenge for the remains. I hope that all of you enjoy this photo.

Re: The Great Photography Thread - REVIVED!
Vanessa,
Thank you.
There are two basic ways to get shots like this.
1. Build a hide, stay secreted inside
2. get to know the feeding patterns, locations and times, move in and get ready and stand very still.
They react to movement, both methods are attempting to avoid spooking them with movement. This picture was taken with the 2nd method.
Some people load the plants with nectar or sugar solutions to lure the birds to a particular location. I don't go in for any of that. For me, it then becomes a bit like taking a picture of an animal in a zoo. The honeyeaters always feed at the grevillea so it's not necessary.
I got another action shot of the same bird species today. If you have any specific Q's about photography, feel free to ask. I've been teaching photography workshops for the past 26 years.
cheers
Joe

Re: The Great Photography Thread - REVIVED!
Thank you for that information Joe.
Also, thank you for the offer of photography advice. I most certainly will fire some questions your way at some point
When it comes to action shots generally, but particularly regarding wildlife, I am a bit of a coward. I haven't had much success capturing pin sharp images of fast-moving objects. Even though I am aware of some of the basic requirements; for example a fast shutter speed and following the action with your camera before releasing the shutter. There are probably other considerations too, but I have shied away from trying. I think I have been so disappointed when failing to get good action photos in the past that I tend to stick to more 'static' subjects now
Maybe one day I will surprise myself. It probably won't turn out to be an award winning shot, but just to get one I am pleased with would be a great achievement for me.

Re: The Great Photography Thread - REVIVED!
A couple of iPhone wildlife photos from yesterday. (Sorry about the quality, but I didn't have my "real" camera with me, and both were in poor lighting conditions (actually the Frogmouth was in no light...)
The first is a koala seen when I was walking with my 5yo granddaughter to the local bakery. It was just next to a main road, and she couldn't work out how it could possibly be asleep with all the traffic noise...
The second is a "Tawny Frogmouth", an owl-like bird, on the phone wire out the front of our house. This is the first one I have seen in the suburbs.

Re: The Great Photography Thread - REVIVED!
Bizarrely, on Saturday I saw a whitetail munching on a tree in somebody's front yard in the middle of a suburb of 150,000 people. The only explanation I can think of is that it traveled along the side of the railroad that runs through town. The right of way is brushy in a lot of places and that's probably also where my coyotes hang out since I've seen them from the train.

Re: The Great Photography Thread - REVIVED!
Hi all. Here is our Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana). It is native to Brazil and other parts of South America, but has also spread into the Caribbean and southern United States. Here is a photo of the fruit branch it produced this year. When ripe, the fruits will turn orange, however they are considered inedible, as they are not like the palm dates that you get from the Mediterranean region and California. But, it is still a beautiful tree. (Our Camphor tree is in the background.)
