I usually have a few going simultaneously:

"The Forbidden Stars", Pratt. Book Three of the Axiom scifi series. Hugo Award winner.
"The Cold Dish", Johnson. Book One of the Longmire series. Want to see how the books compare to the TV version. Written in first person, which seems a little weird to me.
"The Italian Campaign", Strawson. WW2 military history
"Triumphant Fox, Erwin Rommel and the Rise of the Afrika Korps", Mitcham.
"The Cosmic Perspective: Stars, Galaxies, & Cosmology", Bennett, et.al. A bit dated, but paperback format makes it easy to take with me and read snippets here and there to review some basic stuff.
September issues of Sky&Tel and Astronomy. The October issues are sitting until later this month.

For starters, I read a lot, especially REAL books A few days ago I picked up an old book from the Goodwill store called "Bette & Joan, The Devine Feud". It 's pretty good so far!

I mainly read non-fiction although I have read the entire Harry Potter and Narnia series

I am very fortunate. In my area we have a "store" called "The Book Barn". It's background is a hobby gotten way out of control. I would take a guess and say they have, easily, 500,000 or more used books. It started out in a barn and quickly grew to encompass 6 buildings, then they opened up another location, then another, and then another... all within about 1 mile of the barn itself. They have just about anything you could possibly want. Paperbacks are $1.00. You can sell books to them as well. I have 13 shelves of books I've bought over the years and I read one from a shelf before going on to the next shelf. It takes about 9 months to go around once. All kinds of books - from the classics (ie Homer's Illiad) to sci-fi to 19th century romance novels. Yeah - I'm a pretty eclectic reader. Some of the 19th century books are "roll on the floor" funny these days. One particularly interesting book was "The Water Cure"... a medical book espousing using water and/or ice to cure just about anything. Anyway, I'm just about done with "Excaliber" by Bernard Cornwell. There's another thread about collecting things - and I just realized that I am a collector of Tom Swift, Jr books (from the 1960s) I have all the books from 1-30, but I have not been able to find the remaining 6 books - and I've been searching for 30+ years.

BTW, long ago I read Othello in 14th century English. The language was awesome.

I haven't read "The Girl Who Lived Twice". It's #6 in the Millennium / Lisbeth Salander series. I've not been happy with David Lagercrantz's continuation of Stieg Larsson's work. I don't think he gets Lisbeth's character quite right. Larsson based the character on observing his niece.

Well, I've finished "The Girl Who Lived Twice". I have to say that there was a point when a howling error in taste (a heavy handed translation of the 2016 US election dynamics to Sweden) nearly caused me to retch and put it down. But after getting over that it became a real page turner. He's getting Lisbeth better. So it was odd. I swung from never wanting to read another in the series to wondering if there will be another one?

I've switched gears. Next in the "fun" queue was some ancient historical material on a somewhat controversial topic. I couldn't bear the idea though so I opted for a not-so-noir detective novel. The eighth in the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny.

"The Beautiful Mystery" of the title is a reference to music and its notation, not the book. I was put onto Louise Penny by a daughter's recommendation. Penny has a nice polished prose style that is fun to read. I wouldn't say it's noir, but it has its noir-ish elements. Social problems, flawed heroes/heroines. I like the long story arc of Gamache's family life that links the books together much like the Longmire series.

If you want a cop story with more than the usual literary merit I highly recommend Penny's work.

My wife has been listening to the "Baby Ganesh Agency" series of mystery novels. They're pretty good, and cute - we've listened in the car on some trips in the past, but I have not actively read/listened to them on my own.

I think my next book is going to be the 2020 Hugo Award winner - "A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine. (I've been on a Sci-Fi kick lately).

Also listening to the audiobook version of "Cosmos" off-and-on - usually when mowing or walking on my own.

Right now, I'm going to revisit Edgar Allen Poe, of the macabre genre. Personal faves are "Into The Maelstrom", "The Pit And The Pendulum", "The Masque Of The Red Death" (how fitting in terms of Covid-19 today?), "The Tell Tale Heart", on and on.

Trivia: Poe was mentioned in "I Am The Walrus" by the Beatles. Koo koo ka joob!

The series of books that The Expanse TV series is based on is really pretty good. It has the most realistic picture of a space faring civilization centered on Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt I've encountered.

Another member here recommended Liu Cixin's "The Three Body Problem". I really liked it a lot and will continue once the sci fi mood strikes again.

Not science fiction, fantasy actually, but I've recently read the Georgina Kincaid series of books by Richelle Mead.

She is a Succubus, immortal and can change her appearance at will, who has friends who are Vampires, Imps and Angels.

Well worth a read if you're into that type of genre.
