What are some of the things you collect?

#1

Post by Ylem »

I have been trying to downsize and simplify my life.
This got me thinking of my collections and what should stay or go.

I have a bunch of old railroad stuff; things from the dining car, playing cards, maps, tools, lanterns, first aid kits, signs you name it.

I also like old radios, especially shortwaves, I even have a semi-working 1949 Philco TV.

A friend of mine collects old slide rules.

So tell us about what you have...

Like you Jeff, I'm trying to downsize and avoiding more accumulation. Just recently a neighbor gave away a beautiful antique Raleigh bicycle in great condition and she was quite assertive about giving it to me but I proudly contained myself. I had cold sweats for days but I'm OK now. I think.

What caught my attention about your post is the old radios. I only have two but I'm currently working on a 1956 German Loewe Opta Truxa and so far it's been one step forward and two steps back on that front.

And then there is my childhood comic book collection. Just can't get myself to give them away yet.

Old Time Radio Shows. Have about 200 some shows in the collection comprising some 31,000 episodes. You name it, I more than likely have it. Enjoy these on those cloudy nights.
Lunar Books. Have about 150 in the collection. Oldest being 1878 by Simon Newcomb. It is getting expensive now since rarer books have sky rocketed in price.

Nice!

I know some guys that play back the old shows through their old radios.
Just hook some alligator clips to the speaker :)

I also love old Moon books :)

My collecting days are over, and I am also downsizing. Over the years I collected hundreds of 78 Records and a few Valve Radiograms and wind up gramaphones, a couple of Pianolas and I built up a collection of about 600 pianola rolls. A few military recievers and Ham radio equipment, Some lapidary machines to cut stones in my youth, bags of gemstones , metal detector, kept and bred hundreds of small Australian finches and a few parrots and lorrikeets in 4 nice aviaries . But its mostly gone now, just one gramaphone a pianola and a smattering of ham gear gathering dust... Sadly out of 4 sons and 3 step children and 8 grandkids I cant find a taker haha .... Phill

Phill, I used to have an ARC-5 if you recall what that was.

I believe it was an Airforce radio.
It was set up for 40 metres. I made my first contact using that as a receiver and a Johnson Viking transmitter.

Not sure if I collect any one thing but I do have two curio cabinets, Guess I collect curios.

Some of the contents:
- replica Australopithecus afarensis skull and Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth
- dilithium crystals used on TOS.
- My great uncle's "Reflectors, mirror, SA, .303-inch-adapter Mark I. L" that he used with his Ross in WW1
- My grandfathers crosscut saw-set, hammer and associated tools
- my first piggy bank
- piece of amber with an encased pseudoscorpion.
- various badges I have worn/earned over the years.
- roughly 2000yo hand adze
- a few log boom dogs that I found on the side of a lake in the middle of nowhere in the NWT
- Staff compass.
- RCM coin with a piece of a meteorite on it.
- *lots* of miniature figures.
- grizzly bear tooth
- Ingrid Bergman's autograph.

And I second the old radio plays. especially the 30's and 40s.

I thought I had responded to this? It was a while ago in 1997. A firefighter was injured. All the occupants of the condominiums (condominia?) were safe.

Well, I've never been much of a collector really.

Unless you count jewellery, handbags, purses and clothing

Nothing very exciting for the gentlemen amongst us though

I have a fair amount of HO-scale model railroad equipment. I haven't bought anything for over two years though - dismantled my layout when we moved to this place and haven't done much with it since.

Aside from that, books - astro and military history.

I used to have a bunch of old 0 Gauge trains, a few over a 100 years old. A layout with old tinplate buildings.
I sold it all off in my down sizing plan.

"Condominia" sounds like an STD.

  • A real German soldier's belt buckle given to me by my father. The swastika and words "Gott Mit Uns" on it. I believe that means "God With Us".
  • Like nFA, I have tons of books. I just downsized the books to make room for new ones. Mostly non-fiction, ancient civilizations, Alexander the Great (a favorite interest of mine), music bios, music autobios, American history bios, etc.
  • Several sets of Kiss dolls. Not worth mega bucks, but some sets could pull in $30 or more. Still in packages.
  • A Yamaha keyboard
  • A Fender Squier Stratocaster with Taj Majal and Bobby Bland autographs on it, that my ex-wife won at the North Atlantic Blues Festival and gave to me.
  • An Ibanez Jem guitar body and neck, that I am going to rebuild. It plays great, but I want to change a lot of the hardware, and put in DiMarzio pickups.
  • CDs with autographs from Dave Mustaine, Neal Morse, a couple others.
  • A framed picture of B.B. King's tour bus with an autographed ticket stub (we met him and shook his hand).
  • Dust, but I'm working on downsizing that too.

I'm married to a woman who believes that if it's worn out, hasn't been used for six months or is not a thing of beauty then it belongs in the bin! I had to lay down a rule that if it's got my name on it, I decide what category it's in! My Sky at Night magazines and Planet Rock magazines are not up for debate.

Regards

Graeme
