I got rained on last night!!!
I was set up in my backyard and I run a CAT5 cable into my home to control the telescope NUC from inside. I was trying to see if the Helix nebula was yet above my neighbor's roofline. It was but for some reason, I was just getting a blank overexposed screen. I stepped outside to see clouds rolling in from the south. So I went inside to hunt for a target to the northwest since that area was still clear. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a flash and realized it was lightning. I went outside just as the rain started. I quickly powered the system down and unplugged all the cables from the scope to the mount, removed it and took it under cover, and then quickly threw my rain cover over the mount till the rain passed about 20 minutes later. I'm glad I was still awake and monitoring everything closely. Luckily, no raindrops on the objective, and the camera seem to be fine.

Forecast says clearing by noon, temps in 70s. Looks highly probable, given the current sat image.

The smoke that has choked the air dissipated yesterday morning with a southeasterly breeze that blew the smoke to the east (for the most part the direction of the fires). The Chiliawack complex is burning in steep terrain east of my home in northern Whatcom County and southern B.C.

The Pasayen complex is burning east of this fire. There are 8-10 fires started by lightning strikes which have merged to form the complexes. So far, so good. Weather at the moment is a slightly cloudy 67 degrees with little wind. So hopefully the crews will make progress.

Clear and perfect temps. And the densest wildfire smoke possible on the smoke map. Oh well, the moon would muck things up anyway.

My youngest has been upgraded to a Cat 1 hurricane. I asked him while we were out having tacos Saturday what he has against Tampa.

Clear here now and tonight, but temps are forecast to drop into the 40s (F).

We've had a remarkable stretch of mostly clear weather and seasonable temps - going on a couple weeks now, I think. If only the next few months would stay that way.

Dropping into the mid-40s (F) at night, so my hoped-for end-of-the-season camping trip to a dark site is probably not going to happen. Plan B is just do some sessions at club dark sites and sleep at home. Better than nothing...

Add / update: Looks like tonight might be the end of the fabulous clear nights - rain coming. And first frost predicted for Saturday. :sigh:

Getting colder quickly. I had to dig out the light jacket from beneath a pile of winter coats and discover the usual things left in the pockets from a year ago, including old receipts, half-used rancid lip balm and wrappers from long forgotten food.

On the upside, the sun goes down early. I need to get outside and look up. If only the clouds would part.
