Finally stumped out my £59 quid after a few debates, and reading around, I went for the semi APO rather than the fringe killer for my refractor (Celestron 102).

Should be with me on Friday (yes, when the clouds are threatening to reappear).

When I can, I will post some before and afters; just wondered if anyone had used this filter on an achromat, and what their predictions are?

I splashed out on an ex-demo Celestron Xcel LX 2x Barlow to compliment my 25 and 12mm Xcel lenses (which I love).

Slowly I sink further into the money pit

The SA filter is a very subtle filter so if expecting noticeable improvement of skyglow or CA reduction (you may notice a bit with the longer focal length) you would get almost identical results using a Wratten #8 yellow filter.
You will get a slight yellow cast to the view with the SA as well.
In light polluted skies it will dim the skies enough that it may block some objects that you are trying to view.

What exactly do you plan on using it for, general viewing, planetary??

There are other options that may suit you needs better.

I agree with Gabrielle, especially for the light pollution part. I have one, but mostly use it with my DSLR and viewing on Venus I have two Celestron/Vixen f/11.4 80mm's, and it actually block some dimmer stars in my Bortle 7-8 skies. In my 80mm f/15 there is just no point. However, I have used it a few times in my 60mm f/7 on clear nights, and noticed the views were more like the 80mm's with regards to better color and a blacker background. But it has to be a really clear night...
I have nothing against it for what I use it for. Would I buy it again? Probably not, but just my opinion. Still, for the price, I am happy with it for what it does

Thanks Gabrielle and Mike for your comments, as I understood it the Semi APO combined the characters of the fringe killer and the moon glow. Quite a few people prefer it for reducing achromatic fringes, with less yellowing. I may have got this wrong, but it’s the way Baader promote it.

Really I want to knock out fringing on the moon, and bright stars near DSO’s, what do you reckon? Celestron 102 F6.5.

I paid my money and made my choice in reality...

I have one also, it works pretty well on the brighter objects - the Moon, Venus, Sirius, etc. It does not remove all of the fringing. There is still a bit of blue leftover, especially with stars. The most important negative of this filter is that it knocks about 1/2 a stop off of your imaging setup, so you will need to image longer for the same ADU level you would get without it. I did not like this negative for DSO imaging so I stopped using it.

Actually the better combination is the Baader Fringe Killer combined with the Moon and Skyglow which is what I use.
The SA filter has the weakest cutoff for violet, the FK is a bit more aggressive and with the MSG you get a much more natural view than using the SA.

Ah, understood, I’m a bit limited on the amount I can spend on the hobby currently. I may have to acquire that set up over time.
I will post some shots, as it will be with me in about an hour thanks to RVO’s fast delivery.

If you have a Wratten #8 do a comparison between the two.
