Suggestions for Scope for Galaxies on AVX

#1

Post by TheButcher »

Hey all,

i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a telescope that will work with an AVX mount (Weight capacity wise) with a 1600mm-P or 183mm-P, an 8 pos ZWO EFW, Field Flattener and Orion Guide scope 50mm deluxe helical with ZWO 290mm on it. The scope will be used for thee upcoming Galaxies and then use for some planetary imaging, but mainly for Galaxies now. I would like to get a larger view of the Galaxy rather then the one I get with my Skywatcher ED80 @F6.25

So far I have been looking at the (6" GSO RC or similar RC) or a (Celestron C8 SCT or SCT 8") of some sort that weighs around 12lbs (If that is my weight limit with camera gear?). I probably will pick one up second hand and my budget is flexible but would like to keep it around $400-$800 range.

Thanks all and look forward to your suggestions :)

I have the GSO 6" RC (actually, one of the equivalents) and an ES 80mm (f/6) APO. With these two OTAs on my AVX, I can frame and capture just about anything the sky has to offer. Oh, I also have the AstroTech AT2FF field flattener and the Astro Physics CCDT67 Focal Reducer for the RC. So, yeah, with all that stuff, pretty much the skies the limit.

Cheers,
JT

I have considered a 6 RC for a long time, just seems so neat and compact, but have not got one since I can't justify it. I have seen the 6 RC's for $200 in the used market quite a few times, so this and a reducer is well within your budget. Should cover all those spring galaxies well with your cameras.

Clear skies,

One other thing, I believe the 8" RC with all your imaging gear attached will be just a bit too much weight for the AVX to handle smoothly. I feel that too many subs might get thrown out due to sub-par guiding performance.

Thanks Steve and JT.

That 6" RC is looking good and for that money. My other option was selling the 183mm-P when I get my 1600mm-p back and upping the mount situation. Any recommendations on something that would handle about 7-10 more lbs but not leave me broke, maybe used but prefer new? I then would have about $1500 to play with and could scrounge around some more dough for a used $500 8" RC or something a month later.

Thanks :)

I'm thinking about upgrading from the AVX as well. I'm looking at the CGEM II or the EQ6-R mounts

CGEM II or EQ6 are not to bad of a price. I wonder how much I could get for my AVX then either trade-in or classifieds. It is a little less then a year old.

If you can swing the cash, definitely the EQ6-R Pro. I've already done the research and it was in my list of top four. I am fortunate that my wife is giving me an infusion of cash so that I can afford the iOptron CEM60.

Cheers,

I've seen one recently on CN going for $700, I'm expecting somewhere around there hopefully :)
