Suggestions for camera/gear purchase

#1

Post by ram »

Hi all, last year I was thinking of getting a new camera. The main reason I'd like to do is to get higher resolution (smaller pixels) for shooting small galaxies and such with a fast scope like a refractor. One more reason is that I'd like to connect a Canon lens and shoot really wide field images and again in those cases, smaller pixels would help. The smallest pixels I came across then was in the QHY183M at 2.4MP. But I've been reading posts about newer cameras and not sure if I should go there. This would also enable to keep my set up as is - I could probably continue to use the same EFW but I plan to get the QHYCFW3-M-US with the 8 1.25" carousel so I can do both 1.25" RGB imaging also if I buy inexpensive RGB filters (i.e., have all 6+ filters in one EFW would be nice).

QHY has a deal where they're selling the 183M for $999 and then the 183C also for 50% off. Is this worth doing? I already have the QHY247C which I think is good enough for most purposes.

Also does anyone have QHYCFW3-M-US filter? If so, do you get the choice of one carousel or if in the future you want to go from 1.25" filters to 2" filters, what are your options?

Also has anyone used the Cyclops Optics LUX series LRGB filters vs. the Optolong LRGB filters - any thoughts on which is better?

Does anyone see any problem with this? At the moment I think this is the easiest way to get some gear without too much of a big transition. Thanks a lot!

have you looked at the asi 294? with it's ''super pixel mode" aka 1x1 binning .. should work out 2.3um 8288x5644 ,46.7mp

it's a strange camera, set at default as 2x2 bin, it also does hdr imaging where one set of pixels will under expose and produce a hdr image while the other pixels will do longer exposures.

the fullwell drops from 66k to 14 k in 1x1 bining, it's a fair bit,the info at zwo states it has a 90% qe in both modes ..
ps.i don't think the mono does hdr, only the osc model ..

That's a great suggestion - I didn't realise the pixel sizes were so small. I thought the 1x1 size 4.5 or something but that's the 2x2 size.

The QHY has a similar camera and it says below it has been unlocked - is that what you mean by "mono does hdr" comment?

The unlock quote from qhy is stating that you can run it in 1x1 bin mode , btw both qhy colour and mono use different chips compared to zwo..

Zwo is using sony imx492 for it's mono
And qhy is using a imx294c

Qhy,s osc is using something else , imx294cjq ,it does not do 1x1 binning or hdr, this is why qhy have highlighted that thier new mono is "unlocked" for 1x1 binning ..

Qhy spec is 70 % qe while zwo spec is 90 % peak

Qhy,s mono is 17k fullwell in bin 1x1, Zwo is 14k fullwell at 1x1 bin

It's stange, qhy and zwo usually make a matching competitive product but these cameras and chips are pretty different from each other..

I don't even think their colour version falls into any competitive category with the 294 series from both manufacturers ,the zwo version just seems better, qhy,s mono on the other hand has more fullwell in binning with slightly less pixels over the zwo, the trade off is fair .

I read someone posting on CL who tried both versions that the QHY version was better (something about the onboard memory? not sure but for their purposes the QHY worked better).

What is troublesome for me is the EFW - I want to use it with a Canon lens and the QHY EFW that is thinner I wanted to get no longer supports 1.25" mounted filters - what a crazy thing to stop supporting. I could do two ZWO mini-EFWs, one for NB, one for LRGB, but this seems cumbersome.

What filterwheel is this for ,an older product?, thier newer QHYCFW3-M-US sells with a 8x1.25" Btw zwo does a 8x 1.25" but its 20mm thick . Have you contacted qhy for carousel ? It use to be easy to get a replacement, now most manufacturer only let you choose at checkout with the product and not allow to buy extras.. i only see starlight express selling extras atm..

Hi Ram - I use the ZWO 8-Position EFW. It accepts either 1.25" mounted or 31mm unmounted filters. works flawlessly with my 31mm filters.

The EFW thickness is 20mm. Is it too thick for your setup?

Details at the link below.

According to Robin of Cyclops Optics, QHY has discontinued the 8 x 1.25" carousel in the QHYCFW3-M-US. The CFW3-S-US does support 7 x 1.25" BUT Robin said the backfocus for their blade adapter won't work. I've asked for clarification from both QHY on their board (about getting a replacement carousel) and also Robin about the CFW3-S-US which says it is thinner than the M-US. So I'm not sure what's going on. If anyone here has used the BLADE adapter from Cyclops with a QHY setup I'd love to know.

Thanks Yobbo!

Hi Steve, thanks! That's good know there's a 8 x 1.25" ZWO EFW available. I use a ZWO mini-EFW right now that is 20mm wide that works great for most things so I could indeed use that for normal use but I'd like to connect my Canon lens to the camera and use this Cyclops Optics BLADE adapter which is designed for doing it and has a great reputation for working well (the QHY adapter apparently does seat the lens but is not rigid whereas the BLADE adapter is a tight fit). This adapter requires a thinner EFW than 20mm. QHY offers this in two forms, small and medium, and previously the medium did do 8 x 1.25".

Anyways I've gotten contradictory info from the QHY site and from Robin so I'm waiting for clarification. It does appear though that QHY has discontinued the 8x1.25" option for their thin medium EFW but they do appear to have a 7 x 1.25" with a thinner small EFW so I'm wondering why that wouldn't work.

I can checkout with the 8x1.25 on Cyclops.. also qhy looks like they removed the 8x1.25 and now only have a 7x1.25 and 7 x36mm, but the dimensions diagram still show the old 8x1.25 carousel wheel..

Maybe qhy want to ditch the 8x because it's not selling or they want to make all the internal carousel factory swappable with the 7x1.25 with all thiere filter wheel lines.

Anyway you could try your luck with the checkout on Cyclops, alot of other retailer's are only selling the 7x36mm with the efw ..

I'm okay with the 7x1.25" but not sure why it won't work with the BLADE adapter. I'm in touch with Robin the owner of Cyclops so we'll see what he says. Thanks for your help Yobbo! I think it was Starlight instruments or Starizona that had a thin EFW also.

Alternately I could give up on the Cyclops adapter and go for the QHY adapter for the Canon lens which would solve a lot of these problems. The Cyclops adapter is designed with the QHYCFW3 in mind and I think that's the issue but if it is short (not long) 2 mm that's just a 2mm spacer. So I hope that's what it is - we'll see.

Hi Steve, Yobbo, since you two replied to this thread, do you know a good vendor here in the US I could discuss the matter the 194M + Canon lens combination - the adapter, the back focus requirements, the EFW that would support it, etc.? Or I could just order the items on the CO page and let the chips fall where they may but I'd like to get all the pieces together in one shot if possible. I usually get my info on forums and order what I want. Do you guys have preferred vendors or just do what you feel like doing?

I'm strongly leaning towards getting the QHY294M. The bit depth (+2) is why it is better than the 183M right? It also has a larger sensor area.

--Ram

PS: I've had this weird set of interactions with Robin from Cyclops Optics. As you know, I want to use their BLADE adapter (instead of the QHY adapter which may work but I've heard isn't as a good as the CO adapter) for the Canon lens. But every time I write them via their web page, I get an instant response and then when I write them via email I don't - it's been going on since last fall. I'm going to try follow up via their web page.

I can't help you on a vender, aussie here, purchasing from usa or uk is very pricey now since our gov has had a crack down on customs import duties.
i aggree with the qhy294m ,being a nice product even though the chips are different to zwo, i did check out some astrobin images in it's super pixel mode, the product dosn't differ too much from zwo line as long it's the mono version , it should do well keeping your imaging train matched to a qhy efw too.
