Help selecting auto focuser.

#1

Post by Larry 1969 »

Good day all!
I got myself a new camera (Altair Hypercam 26C) over a month ago and have yet to try it out due to the weather...
So my budget has recovered a bit and I'm looking into automating my focus routine and there are a lot of choices.
I have a really nice Moonlight 2" focuser already so I'm looking for something to attach to it rather than replace it.
I spoke with Ron from Moonlight about their Hi-Res stepper and it requires their controller as well... I was hoping
for something a bit more stand-alone. There is the Pegasus Focus Cube. I think I might be able to use that without
an additional controller. Also the Sesto Senso from PLL... All seem to be ASCOM compliant...

Anyone care to share their experience with any of these?

Thanks!

Larry

Larry, I've got the Focus Cube and quite happy with it. Solidly built and really good tech support from Pegasus Astro if you need it. I think the big thing with any of these solutions is determining how well they match your focuser. One of the reasons I went with Pegasus is I saw they had a good solution for my Esprit 100 and had some nice documentation,
Scopes: Esprit 100, 12.5" Telekit Dob
Camera: 294 MC Pro, 224 mc, 2600mm
Guiding: ZWO 290 mini on 120mm guide scope
Mounts: EQ6R-Pro, EQ Platform.
Filters: Optolong L-Pro & L-Enhance, Chroma 36mm LRGB, 5nm HA, 3nm OIII, 3nm SII.
Software: SharpCap, SGP, StarTools 1.7, Photoshop, Pixinsight

Thanks for the reply.
After some further discussion with Ron from Moonlight, it appears they have a new V3 focus motor that has the controller built-in.
It's brand new and not on their website and it's a perfect match for my focuser. It's ASCOM compliant as well.
And, of course, it's probably my most expensive option at $420 but I didn't skimp out on the focuser so...
