ASI071MC pro or ASI2400MC pro?
I'm trying to decide on a new camera, looking for input (dangerous, I know). Current camera is a 1st generation ASI1600MC-cooled and looking at either the ASI071MC Pro or the ASI2400MC pro. Yes, I want to say with OSC camera. Currently using a Celestron Evolution 8 OTA with the Celestron .63 focal reducer and Celestron OAG and will stay with this setup for a while. Probably add hyperstar set up at some point. I know the cost difference is there, but not a concern right now. I see some people that take amazing astrophotos on here. Lend me some of your expertise. the ASI071MC pro or the ASI2400MC pro, which would be the better choice?

Hello RW
If you go here: Astronomy Tools you can see what various cameras will look like with your telescope.
Click on the image to get a better view. The ASI294 is a similarfov to your old 1600. the 1071 is a bit wider and the 2400 is quite a bit wider.

Graeme

With your imaging setup, you are imaging a pretty small chunk of sky. So, the bigger the sensor the more sky you will be able to image. So for me, I would choose the larger sensor in the ASI2400MC pro since price is not a factor. Just remember that as your sensor gets larger, the greater the effects of vignetting will become apparent especially in a long FL SCT .
Cheers,
JT

Re: ASI071MC pro or ASI2400MC pro?
Well, to be frank, why switch? I have a 1600MC and it performs well. My concern is your scope setup, just like mine, an SCT with reducer. I can't fill the 1600MC without vignetting now and I did all the SCT tricks, 2" backplate, custom adapter for motor focuser, Starizona reducer to alleviate this.
Maybe just need some more tricks to get the most out of your 1600MC. The 12 bit depth needs more shorter exposures is all that I find annoying, and importantly the absolute need for a UV/IR cut filter.
Now, if you were going to get a wide field 'frac, then I would say chose either.
Clear skies,
Steve
