SGP 'crosshairs' go poof?

#1

Post by UlteriorModem »

Wisent sure where to put this one but...

Last night I was working with the Celestron mount and it's ASPA (All star polar alignment).

This routine requires you to 'center' a known star.

I turned on the crosshairs in Sequence Generator Pro to help with the centering.

Thing is whenever a new subframe came in the crosshairs would disappear, requiring me to turn it back on again. Not exactly ideal. Ended up putting a small piece of tape on the monitor :)

Anyhow why is SGP doing that?

I asked over on the SGP forums but they roll kinda slow over there.

Yeah can stretch the histogram and keep it that way for incoming frames, but the cross hair didn't stay.. And I'm pretty sure you can stay zoomed in aswell

I just use sharp cap for setup, star alighnment then go back to sgp

Geeze that is so annoying.

My post at the SGP forums went un answered. At least I know I am not alone.

Tom,

I use PHD2 to star alignment with my imaging camera and scope. It has a crosshair overlay. Once a quick star align is done, I do polar alignment using PHD2 and the imaging camera. Once polar aligned, I switch to SGP and configure PHD2 for the tracking. Actually, SGP will take care of PHD2 when Connect All Equipment is done.

SGP doesn't do polar alignment, so I always will have to switch control software once.

Hrm not a bad idea but phd2 is 'tied' to the guide camera which is on an OAG. There is no way to 'center' a known star since it picks off the edges of the field.

Using sharpcap would work but it is another 'work around'. I feel like I should just be able to pop on the crosshairs in SGP and move on with things.

But evidently not.

Tom,

With an OAG, my method would not work. Since I am using PHD for polar alignment on the imaging scope, it is not that much of a work around. It is basically a two step startup for me, PHD with the imaging scope for alignment, and SGP with the imaging scope for imaging.

With all of the hardware and software for this hobby, I would be surprised to find two people on this forum doing the exact same workflow for imaging.

Clear skies.

When I had a Celestron AVX I made a transparency overlay that I'd attach to the screen, a riff on your solution. It had a rectangle with the FOV traced, and cross hairs in the middle. I'd line up the SGP window under the trace and take it from there. A kludge, but it worked....
