Zhumell 8 Dob and 1600mm Focus Reach Questions

#1

Post by TheButcher »

Hey all,

I just picked up a Z8 for a good price, Mostly I am gonna use it for the ISS project that I want to do and also will use it to bring up to my Nephews for him to look at.

But I am thinking about also getting rings for it to throw on top of my CEM70 using a 1600mm-P with a ZWO EFW. Now will that reach focus or will I have to do some modifications? I know with a DSLR I would have to.

Also what other accessories would I need... a Coma corrector ect..?

Thx All :)

Hi,

The back focus distance for a DSLR, meaning the distance from the flange to the sensor is 45 mm plus an additional 10mm for the t-ring, total =55mm. For the ASI 1600 it's only 17.5 mm.

Does this mean it will come into focus with your Z8, I'm not sure but it stands a better chance than a DSLR.

Cheers,
JT

Thx JT,

It will be interesting to see when it arrives. I guess I got nothing to lose Since it was an afterthought, And its main intent was for the project that I want to do with the ISS and the ability to observe with my Nephew when I watch him with it.

It's fun when I have a number of friends and neighbors over and I have my CPC1100 (C11) setup and my 8" Newt/Dob also set up. I put a green laser on the finderscope frame of the C11 which is aligned with the scope so that when I do a go-to to an object for the C11 and while folks are looking at that object, I can turn on the laser and let the folks looking through the Newt see exactly where we're pointing so that they can move that scope to the same location. By the way, the end of the green laser beam is actually visible in the telescope and it is pointing almost exactly at the object we're looking at in the C11.

It's pretty cool, just be careful with the green laser,

Great Idea, would save much trouble for new people just looking. I couldn't do it in my area though, I got a major airport 15 miles away and when I go to my Nephews house, there is a small airport a couple of miles away. But as soon as I get my vision fixed I can drive at night again and may check that out when I travel away from the city area more.

I had cataract surgery last year and 3 months after my eyes clouded up again. I was supposed to have it corrected late spring but then COVID hit and now I got to wait still and But hopefully in December when I am scheduled, they will take patients again.

The best of luck with the procedure in December. Most of us don't understand the total impact that very impaired vision imparts on the afflicted.

Here's to useable night vision,

I finally got my Z8 the other day. And I took the Z8 out today for testing with my 1600mm-Pro with EFW. It reached Focus with no issues and a decent amount of room to spare for inward focus. So now, would I just need a coma corrector in my train? And of course, I would need rings.
