Error 16&17

#1

Post by Astroglide65 »

Hello everybody,
Last week I did a complete Windows 8.1 on my laptop, did 128 updates, installed ASCOM 6.4 Platform, Sharpcap Pro, ASI Camera drivers, PHD2 etc. etc.
Since I was starting over I knew I'd have to create a new profile in PHD2 so I did. Later that night I knew I had to calibrate so while I had time I checked the main camera and the guide camera. Everything was OK. That night I did the PA on my AVX mount thru the PA Scope. Once it got a little darker I did the PA thru Sharpcap. Then I did the 2 star/4 star fandango. OK....I slewed to a nice star and tried to calibrate with PHD2, I connected the camera and mount, let PHD2 select a star and hit the green button, at the top of the screen it told me the mount stopped slewing. Tried again, same results so I picked up the HC and saw the Error messages telling me to hit the Back button, I did but nothing happened. So I did the "Factory Reset" entered all the info, date time location etc. I started over with the 2 star/4 star and chose Arcturus as the first align star. It's a nice bright star easy to see from my location but the mount slewed like it thought I was in another location at another time? Ditto for another choice......I reset the mount again. Same results. Now every night since has been cloudy so I set up everything inside, left the guide scope cap on and launched PHD2. Connected to the mount then the guide camera. I saw some hot pixels so I picked one and hit the green button. PHD2 took it as a star and began calibrating so I let it go for awhile just to see if I got any Error messages, nope so I shut it down. Now the Error messages were usually because low power, I was plugged in the Celestron's 120v to 12v power supply. Nothing was loose or unplugged.

My question is can I run PHD2 calibration on a hot pixel just to make sure everything works and the discard that calibration once the sky's clear and do it for real? I have no idea how the whole thing started do you?

Thanks,
Dano

If you are referring to the Celestron supplied AC to DC power cord these use a fairly stiff thin wire that can easily be broken, check it with a multi meter.
Also check the connection point on the mount itself is not loose or possibly a wire inside has worked itself loose.

I have two questions.
1) Did you cycle the power switch after the factory reset?
2) How are you connecting your computer to your telescope mount, which port are you plugged into?

Cheers,

Yes I cycled the power each time and the pc connects to the mount using a USB cable to the HC. Actually today inside I set up and ran PHD2 with the lenscap on the guide scope. I selected a hot pixel as a star, hit the green button and it began calibrating believing it was on a star. But the star didn't move enough so it failed to calibrate. But nothing failed and there were no error messages. After it was through I chose a few objects on the HC and it slewed to each like normal. What caused the problem in the first place? Who knows until I get a clear sky and run it all again.

Thanks,
Dano

16/17 is a weird one. I have gotten them from time to time and I firmly believe it is Gremlins or random spurious electrons from the Ether!

Cheers,

The 16/17 error is caused by the HC being unable to communicate with the motors, something in your set up is causing this to happen.
If it keeps occurring you may have to start from basic and add one piece at a time until you find the offending piece.
