Modified DSLR - filter etc suggestions pls

#1

Post by Gerald_db »

I am using a Canon EOS 1300D that has been fully modified ie only a clear glass fitted to sensor after removal of filters.

I am using it on a AT 127EDT triplet refractor and get blue halos around brighter stars, not dramatic but they are there and I need to back off from perfect focus to reduce them. I am currently using a Baader Sky and Moonglow filter as it does a reasonable job cutting the excess IR and UV and is a minimum requirement for my full spectrum modded camera.

I am considering rather using a clip in UV/IR filter to replace the Moon and Sky glow and give a sharper cut off on the UV side however my lack of experience and the cost of buying mean I don't want to make a mistake here. What other options are there?

It looks like you have a full spectrum modified camera.
You will definitely need to add a good UV/IR cut filter into your imaging train.
I typically use my Ha modded cameras with a Canon clip-in CLS-CCD filter from my city Bortle 8 backyard.
If you don't have huge light pollution you may just need a regular IR/UV cut filter.

does the moon sky filter cut off uv/ir or is it a visual filter ?, there are also 'fringe killer" filters that help reduce the ca from refractors , typicaly when i use a less corrected refractor i'll use a mono camera for best results on reducing ca/''star halos''.

That's what I was wondering too. If it doesn't cut out UV and IR then a photographic UV/IR cut filter would really help.

A report back:

I purchased two APS-C clip filters from Astronomik.
2020-06-23 19.51.12a.jpg
1: The Astronomik L3 UV+IR Blocker - ideal for dark sites
2020-06-27 19.03.49.jpg
2: The Astronomik CLS-CCD filter for sites with light pollution or moon light present.
I have only used the CLS-CCD so far and its superb. Sharp stars and excellent colour balance.

That's great news! I've really enjoyed using my CLS-CCD especially on emission nebulae.
