Jupiter and his royal entourage

Although we've had some cloudy days and nights, we haven't received any measurable amount of rain for weeks and temperatures have been hovering near 100° with heat indices of 110°-115°. This has made for some pretty poor seeing conditions, but the clear skies have been too tempting to ignore.

Last night, I set up the club's 20" to try to image Jupiter and Saturn again before they got too low in the sky. For fun, after I was set up, I aimed my infrared thermometer at my driveway: 93°. I pointed at zenith and got a reading of 49°. I guess that explains the shimmering view through the eyepiece (click image to view animation):

Despite that, the images stacked fairly nicely:

I was also able to get a cool picture of Jupiter and all of his royal court:

Thanks for looking!

Good stuff, Tom! I especially like the 3rd image. It looks like Jupiter is cracking a moon whip! :D

So I guess I've been getting your share of the rain. Been raining almost daily for nearly two weeks here. Just now (as in a few minutes ago) got put under a severe thunderstorm warning. And Virgo isn't even in the night sky now!

Tom, your first image I clicked on; looks like my views lately; albeit a lot smaller... The second and third images, wow! Great color and focus, thanks for sharing that! :D

All the best,

Really nice animation Tom. That’s probably pretty close to what I would see if I were that close up!

Beautiful stacked Jupiter image. Nice work in challenging conditions!

Thanks,
Jim

That is quite the dance the old man is doing... great job pulling anything out of the muck!

Coolio. Jupiter's moons … the more the merrier. I type this as Gustav Holst's "The Planets", Jupiter movement, is traipsing through the labyrinths of my Cro-Magnon mind! Speaking of which, I wonder, given the rather robust physiology of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon men, and women of course, and given the complete lack of artificial light pollution planet-wide, if their visual acuity was such that they could easily see the moons of Jupiter? Inquiring minds want to know. I once had 20-15 (corrected) eyesight and I could never see them but I've heard some people are able to tease out the moons of Jupiter with their Mark 1 eyeballs.

Thanks for sharing, Tom.

Hello Tom. A very nice set of Jupiter images from you here. The first one with the thermal scintillation was very interesting. The other two are also fantastic. Nice equatorial belting and color, and the GRS really stands out. Thanks for sharing your captures on here Tom, and congratulations on winning the TSS APOD Award.

Thank you, everyone. I'm honored, Gordon. I hope my prize is some better seeing. :)

I used PIPP freeware to create an animated GIF of a few seconds worth of video.
