Hi,

You and I have the same video camera, the Wyze Cam 3. My nighttime time lapse videos are very noisy, much noisier than yours. How do you reduce the noise in your time lapse videos? If you could share your secret that would be great.

Thank you.

Hi JT
most likely reason is location -
areas I have used cams at are Real Dark - middle of nowhere -
I can see maybe 10 house lights many miles away -

have not used cams anywhere there is much light pollution
so I cant say fore sure if there is more noise with lighter sky -

there has been a lot of smoke here and video has More noise
on smokey nights - last 3 meteor nights no smoke Lucky -

my cams have a lot of noise even in best conditions
cant compare to Good camera video quality -

I have tried many cheap cams to see night video and V3
is the Only One that works - miles ahead of others -

On many of the videos I post i list filters and the work flow used -

Im using a Mac -
Resolve 16 edit software -
VLC - video player / Conversion
Hand Brake - Video Compressor for upload -

this is work flow I. use -
its changed over time and may be slightly different on Windows machine -

Make coffee - retrieve cams /charge batteries

Watch Time Lapse TL video using VLC - drag TL file into player window -
Look for meteors/ sats /UFOs - Log timecode on paper and object location in sky -
depending - full TL video 8 ish minutes - one gig ish file

watching TL if you Blink you missed it - Seriously -
Biggest meteors I recorded are a Flash/Streak on screen -split second
smaller ones tiny flash - hard to see - miss Many /most

Seeing Large Flash on Screen is Pretty Exciting - WoW

Next -
Watch video -- try click file open Or using VLC if needed -
Open - One Minutes Files - where object is on timecode -
I usually look at Earlier file Time first - TL hard to stop/ get exact time location

Next -
Using VLC - Convert File - (top window - File > Convert/Stream -
Use Convert option - Drag file into New window that Opens -
Stock settings - Save - make sure 24 frame

This is file used in Video Edit -

Next
Open Resolve 16 -
Import File into Resolve -

Drag File/Clip into Timeline TL - option opens Change TL settings - YES

Next-
add filters

Resolve has Filters that are made for TV/YT/Movie editing -
Not sure how different from Sky Filters - likely a lot -
all the filters are adjustable -

Stack 2 video tracks - use Snapping to aline clips if needed -

Play head on Clip -
Select /Adjust filter TOP clip -
You can See change on screen -

Filters I mostly use -
Hardlight -
Color Dodge -
Devide -
soft light -
Vivid Light -

there is 20 ish filters -most will do something /or some nothing -
try them all

I usually start with 2 tracks stacked - try filters - adjust -

try first - no filters - set opacity Both clips Lower can look good - easy

if cant make look good I add 3rd track -adjust -
4 tracks is most - but sometimes needed to look good -

what I Adjust for -

Brightest meteor streak- Then - Darker Sky -
Go too dark and Bright streak lowered - not good -
sparkle and bright streak most Important -

Next -
Render/Export edited file - Im using Youtube option OR Custom

Watch Video - See how it Looks - OK to dark / light - noise

Go back to Resolve 16 make changes if needed -

Export and Save File -

Next -
Open Hand Brake - video compressor -
Import File -

Settings -
main page - Optimize for Network
Video page --24 Frame --- Constant Quality- Slow/er - RS 22 ish < slide adjuster -
slide changes file size - try for 1/3 rd size ish -

Next watch video if looks OK I upload to YT --

Important -
Each one of these steps Changes video in Someway -
Pretty much every video setting change something - some to alot -
Adjusting/compressing video is a Art and science -
Good stuff is kept secret - Seriously

I worked as editor for TV and movies and Rearly used filters -
so Im fairly new at this -

I have super Limited internet and can not See what videos Really looks like on YT -
that is why I ask for comments on if video looks OK -

One thing Im starting to think is Compressing using Hand Brake
can get rid of much of the noise - Sometime -

Seems like just the right amount of Compression filters out noise -
Noise = adds Data size -Lower data less noise - makes since - maybe

I tried Noise Filters in Hand Brake settings - worked Ok ish -
made LONG render time
not worth using for me but try them -

that is why I did test 2ish weeks ago with TINY file size - 100KB size
Kind of worked -maybe - I asked for comments on looks ??

Video I see on screen from files on computer can
look Way different after Upload to YT -
YT compresses files with The Secret Sauce -

--------------------------------------------------
Try this First - see if works

Convert One minute file using VLC - Stock settings 24 frame

Import this One Minute file into Hand Break -
use HB setting listed above
Save -

watch this file- look different ?
Change Slider to higher #
Save - Look Better ?

upload file to YT - look different ?

Let me know how things go -

I think after enough people start using V3 for night sky
video there will be filters made and settings that
will make cam Better -

Ive had a lot of fun with 3 cameras -
covers most of sky visible many locations -
recorded many big meteors and satellites -
Cool stuff and sometime Wow

V3 is a Really Good Satellite cam -
TL speed is Good for sats
records large sats in 4/5 mag - dark sky -
may work ok in city -

V3 works OK as meteor cam -
TL video is Really to Fast for finding meteors easily -

Meteors are bright so might work OK in city -

this is a Noise Test-
no edit- no filters - not compressed by me-
upload to YT -
watched YT playback 240p looks Really Bad -

this was full moon night very bright with some Bright clouds -

video noise less visible but so are stars and meteors less -
at 32 seconds there is meteor top right -
Visible but no sparkle -

So my guess is in city or light pollution grain of noise will be reduced some -
it was real bright this night and clouds in view make for Bad conditions -
cams located in shadow of RV - helps some -
Should be able to capture bright meteors in brighter location -

Cam recorded 10 plus meteors - nothing big -
was hard to spot meteors on TL video -

Have seen several - Ring Cam - Meteor videos that Looked Pretty Good - city locations -
think it records colors better and smoother - V3 black /white
