Anyone interested in....

Post by Jockinireland »

I am on the steep AP processing learning curve at the moment but am getting some great inputs here from the likes of @Juno16, @startoolsastro, @bobharmony and others. In some instances I have made my data available and these guys have processed it their way, shared their thoughts and helped me greatly to progress.

So, my proposal/suggestion would be that if anyone is interested, perhaps we could start a weekly post where someone can make available a stacked but unprocessed data set (fits or whatever) and we could all have a go at processing and then share our experience/results. It would be a great learning opportunity I think. Now I'm thinking "real life - warts an' all" data would be the best as it would allow us to share our tricks for dealing with non optimal data (frankly ALL my data is non-optimal at this stage).

If there is interest then we can start something here. Or if it would make more sense perhaps one of the Mods or Admins could curate some suggestions and then stick one up as a new thread? (or if it does not contravene the boards rules I'd be happy to take suggestions and post accordingly)

Let me know if there is any interest and I'd be happy to be the first to provide some data to get he ball rolling ( infact I have just done so in my "M101 Reprocessed" thread)

Take care

David.

Hi David - Thanks for sharing your data. I'm a little under the weather, so, a good time to use somebody else's data (I don't feel up to gathering my own right now, and, no nebulae in view for me anyway).

I downloaded the three files and have a question. Is the SII data already stretched? The signal level is much much higher than the Ha or OIII.

Love the image you came up with, just beautiful.

Hi Dave - Thanks so much for providing this data. I've recently switched from DSLR imaging to NB imaging. Unfortunately, I can't see a single NB target till late July. So, having a chance to "play" with your data is exactly what i need.

Below is the result of my first SHO imaging. I took my cues for color from your image. It was very exciting to see a reasonable image emerge. I was "holding my breath".

ImageSHO by STEPHEN KING, on Flickr

I like your richer colors and how you reduced the stars. I just installed the latest version of PI and haven't yet installed Starnet. Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks, I was pretty "jazzed" by the result. Nice data to work with.

I usually use Starnet when the combined image is only mildly stretched and the stars are still under control. I enhance the starless image (stretching, sharpening, boost colors, etc.) then add the stars from the mildly stretched image back in. This helps to keep the stars from dominating the image. If desired I can even "reduce the star sizes" in the mildly stretched image before putting the stars back in.

I'm hoping to get a bit further along the learning curve with these data sharing posts!

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hopefully my last attempt at processing yobbo's data on the Eagle nebula. This time I concentrated on getting better stars. I've found this to be quite tricky. Stars still aren't "perfect" but they are much improved (I think). Anyway, here is the result.

Hi

Is there any chance you could save those .xisf files as fits or Tiffs and make them available. - it is a beautiful image and while I'm a long long way from NB images like that it would be wonderful to be able to give processing something like that a go. (Particularly as poor skys followed by 6 weeks of no astro dark are my immediate future). I have done some of the Hubble Legacy archive images so have a basic idea of how to process but would love to give that beautiful eagle neb a go.

I'm sure other non pixinsight users would love to give it a try too.

thanks and regards

David.

Thanks for the nice comments. After comparing my images with your result I can see I have a lot of learning to do. You did a much better job of bringing out details in the background, and, I like your stars better.

As for the SII being washed out, I'm so new to this NB imaging that I can't really tell. A comparison of the same image taken with the two different filters would likely make it obvious (not asking you to do that!).

Thanks so much for sharing your data. Getting a chance to experiment with different processing approaches has given me some confidence that I may be able to do this after all. Certainly still a lot to learn, but, now there is hope!!

I"ve just looked into the new RBA book to check out SHO image processing for more insight/tips. downloaded the AIP-SHO script and gae it a try. I like the results. So many options with PI.
