More flats questions! What ADU value?

#1

Post by Baskevo »

Hi guys,

I have been shooting in narrowband only since I got my ZWO ASI1600mm Pro. When taking flats, I usually go for a median ADU value of 32k, which I am now thinking is too high. I have not seen a problem (at least I didn't think I did) with narrowband, but I think my LRGB frames (especially L) are being overcorrected. I thought that it was supposed to be half of the max ADU value, but the more research I do, I haven't been able to find more than 1 or 2 people who shoot above 30k.

Most of what I see is people are taking flats between 12k and 22k ADU values. So this is a question for ZWO ASI1600mm Pro or similar camera owners:

What ADU value do you aim for when using APT's Flats Aid?

32,000 is fine. Anywhere near 1/2 your full well capacity. 20,000 is fine too. 12K is probably a bit low.
Personal equipment: TEC 140 F7 on Astro-Physics Mach 1 mount. Camera QSI 683ws7. Guide with Vario guiding scope
Shared equipment through Star Shadows Remote Observatory through PROMPT/ CTIO/Chile 16" RCOS 16803 chip
Shared equipment through San Diego Astronomy Society 14" RC with 16803 chip on a paramount
Software (for my stuff) PemPRO, SGP, PHD, Focus Boss, ASCOM, and Pixinsight on the other end.
