Corrupted AVI File

Hi,

Yesterday I shot some video using my ASI120MC capturing with SharpCap 3.2 of the sunset that included the green flash and possibly the purple flash. The problem is that the file did write to disk correctly after the "stop" button was pushed. Now I can't get any of the standard AVI repair programs (VLC, Remo Repair, and Digital Video Repair) to even recognize let alone fix this AVI file even though the file name ends with .avi and it is 2.5 gigs in size.

Anybody have any ideas what my options are here. I would hate to lose this data.

Can PIPP do anything with it?

Have you tried maybe VirtualDub?? I know it is an older piece of software, but I have found sometimes it will open a file which crashes elsewhere.
After you open it, you can maybe trim it down in size and resave it where it will then be recognized in other software.

I thought this was a great idea worth trying because I already have PIPP installed.

Result - loading the corrupted file into PIPP made it CRASH! I tried it twice and both times PIPP went tango uniform!

After installing VirtualDub and then trying to open the suspect .avi file, again both not recognized as a .avi and not able to open it. I hate the idea of losing this data.

I've used DivFix++ in the past.

DivFix++ is a good repair program. However, VLC should also be able to recover your AVI file using the following instrutions.

Open the VLC app and navigate to Tools > Preferences. In the new window, click on the tab labeled Inputs/Codecs and scroll down the to the Files section. Within Files, locate Damaged or incomplete AVI file and select Always fix from the drop-down menu. Click Save ... although, the AVI might only be playable in VLC.

UPDATE!

So I went to the SharpCap forum and posted my issue along with a link to the file itself. Robin Glover (author of SharpCap) responded then promptly fixed the file so it would play. I was so overjoyed I purchased a Pro version license just today! I guess it never hurts to go to the source when you are having issues.

According to Robin it is an index issue. Apparently (sometimes) when SharpCap is writing to disk after the Stop button has been pressed and it senses that disk space may be a problem (especially with a 2.5 Gig file), it will throw a bunch (and I mean a bunch) of zeros into the beginning of the index portion of the file. He knows of this issue and has fixed a few other files like mine.
