New Astro Image Processing PC - Wow!

#1

Post by Juno16 »

Hi everyone,

My son and I have been talking about building a new pc for the past several years. He’s been away at the University of California at Santa Barbara and graduated this past June. Been home in Mississippi since job and is leaving for Navy OCS next week.

We decided it was time.

Since I am a Startools fan, I pm’ed Ivo (Startools creator and member if TSS) and asked him what his suggestions were. He sent them to me and I ordered the stuff.

Basically, this was the build.

AMD Ryzen 7200x 8 core, 16 thread cpu
Ati radeon rx-570 gpu
Gigabyte 8450m-ds3h motherboard
32g 3200mhz ddr4ram
600 watt power supply
Cheap case

I used the 500g ssd from the old pc along with the mouse and keyboard.

Total cost was just over $500 with the Black Friday deals.

Result:
Unbelievable!

I used to keep a pencil and paper next to the pc to record the Startools module I was working on because it would take a long time to process each module.
Now, the modules popped! I can now try out all of the different settings where before I would settle for what I got because it would take so long to process.

Previously, in Photoshop, running the Astronomy Tools Action pack, I would think the pc was locked up and sometimes shut the application down. Now, pop, pop, pop, and bam there was the rendered image.

I used to think that the old PC was okay, I can wait on it.
Boy, was I wrong!

If you are fighting with an old PC to process your astro images on, don’t be like me! Upgrade! Your images will appreciate it!

Thanks,
Jim

That is so cool Jim,

I used to build (assemble) desktops as a hobby many years ago. I found that it was not that difficult and you could build a great machine for not a lot of money.

Can't wait to see what you can process now.

Cheers,
JT

Very nice, Jim! Congrats!

Yeah, when I got my new gamer laptop back in September, things ran so much faster. What used to take about 5 minutes to crank on a lunar capture now takes about 30 seconds. First time I used it on image processing I was all giddy and giggly.

It sounds like you've got a quick one! I'm running all of my processing software on my Linux machine which I built a while back. I've got a small Win10 box I use for Internet and email but it's just too slow for processing.

wow thats really cheap! I think only my upgrade went for around 1000dollar.
A tips to make it even more faster. Get a m.2 ssd for it. the one that you mount ontop of the motherboard. Alot faster then a regular ssd :)

Thanks Micke187!

Yeah, really got some good prices.

My son did tell me about the m.2 and that really sounds like a nice upgrade. I do need more storage anyway. I guess that i could install a m.2, Clone the boot ssd to it, then wipe the old sdd. Hmmm, i will look into that.

One nice thing about using the ssd from the old pc was that my wife can jump on it (only once or twice a month) and see familiarly. She prefers that to technical challenges. Must keep the CFO happy.

I guess that the total price was about $550 total since i did have to get a new Windows 10 key.
Still waiting on the second 16g stick to arrive.

Man, things have come a long way since my first 80486 box with a wopping 8 mb ram and a 100mb hdd!

These new components also have visual appeal! You have a mighty fine looking system. Mine is crammed into a cheap small case, but it looks good too. Temps are still running pretty cool.

Yeah, rgb. It was there, so why not? Looks pretty cool.

I’m not much of a game player, but i do have the latest Doom and Wolfenstein.

I used to play those two a lot many years ago. Back when they would fit on two floppies!

I will install a 512gb nvme soon.

Thanks,

Dang! You guys weren't joking!

The nvme m.2 went in today. Unbelievable fast!

Total price for the pc is not bumping just a bit over $600 (not including the monitor, keyboard, and mouse).

Look at these disk performance values!

NVME M.2 SSD (boot drive)
as-ssd-bench SPCC M.2 PCIe SS 12.17.2019 8-09-56 PM.png
SATA SSD (storage)
as-ssd-bench Samsung SSD 850 12.17.2019 8-11-34 PM.png
Conventional 1TB 5400 rpm hdd (Image Storage)
I had to terminate this test. Taking too long!
as-ssd-bench ST1000LM010-9YH1 12.17.2019 8-35-24 PM.png
The read/writes of these ssd's are incredible!

Yeah, the nvme’s are crazy fast. I must say though, a move from hdd to ssd is substantial too!

Silicon Power ssd’s are very economical. I installed a SP sata ssd in my astro laptop over a year ago and three other SP ssd’s in other pc’s.

This 500g SP nvme was $62 on Amazon compared to a SP 500g sata ssd for $50. Hands down choice for speed, size, and no cabling!

Thats a cool video!

I remember the SR-71 from when I was about 15 years old taking off and flying from Okinawa where my Dad was stationed. Amazing aircraft!

Nice set up! Currently I am running a older Dell XPS i7 4770 desktop, not slow, but certainly could be faster. I ordered a new Dell G5 gaming desktop-
9th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 9700K (8-Core/8-Thread, 12MB Cache, Overclocked up to 4.6GHz on all cores)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6
16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2666MHz UDIMM Non-ECC
256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive + 2TB 7200 rpm 3.5" SATA Hard Drive

I bought another 16gb ram off Amazon that I'll install as soon as it shows up, this should certainly speed things up in Pixinsight!

Yep it can make a big difference. The main thing that makes an impact is good fast ram and lots of it ;)

Wow, that is certainly a powerful rig!

I thought that my old desktop(+10 yrs) was doing okay. When processing with Startools, I would jot down what I was doing so that I could leave the pc to do its thing.
My son talked me into putting this together and I’m glad we did. Almost as much fun messing with the pc hardware as it is to use it.

Could have done with less, but whats the fun of that?

Thanks,
Jim

If you want more speed its not how much memory you got its the speed of the ram that makes it go faster. With more ram memory you can have more Programs webpages et. C open so you dont get bottlenecks. So if you want more speed just overclock the rams. I think you could up them over 3000mhz. But then it depends on if your ram or motherboard support overclocking to those speeds.
