Video Tutorial Demonstrating SURFACE BLUR NOISE REDUCTION In PixInsight

#1

Post by STEVE333 »

Hi All - I have posted a YouTube video showing how to perform Surface Blur Noise Removal with PixInsight. I learned this technique years ago when watching a video by Doug German using Photoshop. I processed with Photoshop for several years before switching to PixInsight. The technique worked so well I developed a way to perform it using PixInsight processes. The link below is to the YouTube tutorial.

Hope it works for you.

Two additional thoughts:
1) After applying Surface Blur Noise Reduction the black level of the image will usually need to be raised just a bit to darken the dark areas.
2) After performing (1) above I usually blend the noise reduced image with the original image 50/50. This produces an image significantly less noisy than the original but with a more pleasing background that isn't unnaturally smooth.

To reduce the noise in the background to the levels achieved with this technique would require approximately 4X the total exposure of the original image.
