APT Not Displaying .FIT Image Correctly

Hello,

I'm just now starting to use a CMOS OSC (ASI 294MC Pro) as my main AP camera. The issue I'm having is with the display of a just acquired image in the preview section of APT. It shows a very sparse starfield with no detail of the object in the frame. Is there something about .fit files I'm missing when either acquiring the image or displaying the image in APT. Also, this is a one-shot color cam and the images are in greyscale. Here is an example frame, the first is a screenshot from the APT preview screen and the second is what the frame really looks like in my graphics viewer (Irfanview).

Hi JT -
1) Click on the Tools tab.
2) Click on the Histograms tab to open up the Histogram window.
3) In the Histogram window click on the Auto-Str L or Auto-Str R button to stretch your image.

Hope that solves your problem.

I'm using a Mono camera, so, can't help you with the color portion of your question.

I only use APT with my DSLR. Quite often there are very few stars in the image. To capture an image to plate solve the programme defaults to a 30 second exposure at 6400iso to get enough stars to work with. The resulting histogram is usually over to the right. I then set the correct exposure for image capture. If the target is faint I wouldn't expect to see anything untill post processing.

As for the grey scale image preview, my Canon outputs CR2 raw files rather than fits. DSS outputs the fit file. But am I right in thinking that fit file is essentially a grey scale file with the colour information embedded in it? What happens when you process your fits?

Hi Graeme,

I've been using APT with my DSLR for the past 5 years. I thought I knew just about all there was to know about this title. Apparently not! Every time I started APT with my new CMOS camera it was already attached to my laptop, so APT would automatically connect to it so I never saw the screen you show above. The one time my camera did not initially connect, and I tried to manually connect to it I saw this screen. Brilliant!
