Orion ST80 back?

#1

Post by ARock »

Just saw on CN, the Orion ST80 seems to be back in 4 flavors. (3 visual, 1 guidescope)

From the pics it does look like the old metal focuser ones, but will have to wait and see the reviews.

I think the Meade Infinity 80mm is a better deal.

My understanding is that the Meade Adventure 80mm f5 is the same scope. Since the "real" ST80 wasn't available, I bought a Meade for $90. I'm quite happy with it.

Yeah the Meades are more affordable.

For a while, the Meade Adventure 80 (I have one) was the only bare bones ST80 clone in the USA, the Europeans still have the SkyTravel 80 and one from Omegon which are the same as the orginial ST80.

Lately the Meade 80mm F/5 s have been disappearing from US stores. The few places that have the Infinity 80 in stock have raised prices (around $180 on Amazon), and might just be left over inventory. The reasons might be Covid related demand supply problems, or maybe related to the Meade bankruptcy/lawsuit.

Anyway it is good to see alternatives available in the US. It certainly is one of the more popular scopes.
