Celestron Nexstar 114mm with goto

#1

Post by GH713 »

Hello, pretty soon people will probably start to find me annoying. Would anyone know why once I set up my scope using a compass and a level, Goto will slew to the first object fairly accurately but the second object is always way out. For example, if after aligning with due north and levelling I select Venus, it will go to it but if I then select the moon next, it's way off as in nowhere near. It is a bit baffling. I might be better off just using a coordinates and manually selecting objects.

I am thinking of maybe a different type of telescope. Something that is very portable and not clumsy. I just find that the field of view is way too limited in my back yard and there is way too much light. Any suggestions would be great.

thanks for any input

Being an az/ alt mount it does not need to be polar aligned and reasonably level is good enough.
Have you set your backlash yet? This gets rid of the lag in the gear system for tracking and goto.
You can do it during the daytime and it takes about 10 minutes or so.

No I have not done the backlash yet. There are so many things to learn and being on the down side of the life curve makes it more challenging lol. I sure I had followed my dreams earlier on in my life. I will read up in my manual and see if I can figure it out.
thank you very much.

It is quite easy to do.
Do you have a reticle eyepiece for when doing alignments? It will help get things centered properly.
The better you can center the alignment stars the better the accuracy.
The mount may not put your target in the middle of the eyepiece everytime but if alignment is done well it should be in the FOV of a 25mm Plossl eyepiece regardless.
