Hi GH713 and welcome to TSS!

Not sure about the Nexstar 114mm, but I have a Nexstar 130 Slt. I can plug in a Celestron SkyPortal module into the AUX port on the mount and control the mount with the free SkyPortal app or SkySafari wireless.

thank you, the 114 is the same set up as the 130. So if I understand, all I need is the rs232 cable and download one of the apps? I guess I need an adaptor for rs232 to my phone or laptop.

No cabling needed. A SkyPortal is a wireless access point. Plug it into the mount aux port. Download and install the SkyPortal (or SkySafari) app on your phone or ipad and connect wirelessly.

Hello Danielle and Jim,

Daniel's mount is the GT mount, not the SLT mount, consequently, it does not have an AUX port. This means that he can't do Wi-Fi, his only method to remotely control his mount, is to use a cable attached to the base of the hand controller. If it's the newer hand controller it'll be a USB connection (mini / micro / C), if it's the older hand controller it'll be the older RJ12 connector.

Either way he should be able to hook up his mount to his laptop or tablet via the cable and then through the ASCOM drivers, he can then use one of the several free planetarium programs, one of which is Stellarium. But I would recommend that he use either Cartes du Ciel or SkyTech X.

Cheers,
JT

What version is the programming in the hand controller?
Depending on that will tell if it can be controlled or not.

hello again, so it looks like an RJ12 (6 connections) plugs into the motor unit and an RJ11 (4 connections) plgs into the bottom of the hand set. The bottom of the handset connection must be for updating software etc..

This is the cabling you will need to go from the base of your HC to your laptop USB port. Unfortunately, it is actually two cables. The first in RS-232 cable with the RS-232 9 pin on one end and the RJ11 on the other. Next, you will need an RS-232 to USB converter cable with the built-in chipset. Here are some examples:

Power on the mount, go into menu and I believe Version is under Utilities (look around you will find it :) )
Once you know what version the programming is then you can et it hooked up properly.

Hi, I powered it up and using the manual, went through all the utilities and everything else I could but did not find a version anywhere. No serial numbers etc. It has to be an earlier model since there is no aux port.. I could take a picture but not sure how to upload to this forum.

Do you have a manual for the telescope? If not here is the one for yours I believe.
If it is, there is no version so cannot be upgraded but the accessories page lists the specific cable you will need to operate the mount from a windows computer.
It also mentions a program that works with it.

Okay, I just ops tested the cables I told you about on the Celestron GT goto mount because I have never used this mount in a way that requires it to be hooked up to a computer. Voilà, it works as advertised.

I would advise you to download SkyTech X, a free planetarium program. It is my new favorite. Of course, you can do this just as easily with Stellarium

Remember you have to download and install the ASCOM drivers plus the Celestron Telescope Driver. Once these are installed then you can plug in your USB to Serial adapter cable. Let your computer install then recognize it. Next, go to your device manager and look at the Ports (Com & LPT) section expand it and you should see what the attached image shows you. If your com port for the Prolific is not 1-4 should change it so it is. If you need to change it, highlight it then right-click, then click on properties. On the new window select the Port Setting tab, then click on the Advanced button. In the new window, you'll see a drop-down showing a com port number, this will allow you to select a new com port.
Device Ports.jpg
Device Ports.jpg (7.55 KiB) Viewed 5582 times
Remember this com port because the ASCOM and Celestron drivers need to know where to look for the data stream. I'm sure there many tutorials on YT showing how to configure the Celestron telescope driver with the correct info.

Now that this is done, turn on your mount, set time and date and location then do an alignment (I do this indoors with no scope attached and point the scope generally north then do a 1-star alignment selecting Polaris, you don't really even need to close, just hit enter then align and you should get an align success notice. Now you can plug your USB to Serial cable back into your computer (if you unplugged it for some reason), wait for a couple of potatoes to give you computer a chance to recognize it then plug the RJ-11 into the base of the HC.

For Stellarium - Do not start the ASCOM drivers because Stellariuym does not need them. Just tell Stellarium to start the telescope control plugin at startup then configure it (still knowing the com port) and you should be RTR.

Okay, your close now. For all other planetarium programs that use the ASCOM drivers, start the ASCOM drivers and then start up your preferred planetarium program, then go to the telescope section and "connect scope".

You should now be Rockin and Rollin.

Cheers,
JT

PS, once you have done all this once, it makes a lot more sense. jt

For any wireless connections I suggest skipping any wifi adapters and go with a BT serial adapter. It frees up wifi, generally costs less, and is still ASCOM and SkySafari compatible. The range is also long enough that one can sit inside with a clear line of sight up to about 30-50ft. If one is good with a Dremel and soldering, one can even integrate a single board module into the handset itself.
