102SLT vs. Omni 102
Does anyone have experience with Celestron 102SLT/F6.47 and Omni XLT 102/F9.8 telescopes? I know one is a go-to but what advantages, if any, in terms of optics and mont does the Omni version have over the SLT? Price is almost the same on the Celestron site.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Both are good options.
Omni mount has better tripod and can handle heavier OTAs. 102/F9.8 will have lessCA than 102/F6.5 and as a result will be better for planets, Moon, splitting doubles and other high power observing. The mount has slow motion cables which is nice for manual tracking. You can also get a motor drive, which will do the tracking for you. But no GoTo .
SLT tripod is flimsier. Mount and tripod have some plastic parts (Omni is all metal) but are adequate for 102/F6.5. On positive side it is lighter and more suitable for grab and go. 102/F6.5OTA will have more CA on bright targets, but it will provide wider views and thus more suitable for DSOs , but will provide somewhat inferior views of planet compared to 102/F9.8.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Simple answer is Omni has the better scope and heavier mount, the money goes there instead of into the goto which is the only advantage of the SLT. Goto is nice and convenient, but if you're OK with finding your own targets (really half the fun), the Omni is the way to go.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
They really are two different tools as you explain them and, of course, I want both. The portability and quick set up of the SLT is attractive while the higher quality mount and perhaps OTA of the XLT are attractive for different reasons.
Clearly, I need more thought and savings to do this right with a single better option once I drop a few more pennies in my piggy bank.
Thanks for the input Ozman and Bigzmey.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Since you already have a nice DSO scope - Z8, the question is what are you looking for in the refractor setup?
102SLT essentially is a smaller grab and goDSO setup with GoTo .
102/F9.8 is more a refractor experience with sharper views of stars and planets.
If you are looking for the refractor experience you may consider saving up a bit more and go for 100mm ED doublet.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
I think you are right Bigzmey. Ideally, I'd like to have both the portability and quality image in a single telescope. Are the ED OTA shorter and more portable than the standard apo long tubes generally?

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Not so long ago I had the same dilemma. I was looking for a small 80mm refractor for the travel kit. Initially I was considering 80mm short tube F5, for the compact size. However, I also wanted one with good planetary and double star performance. Eventually I realized that if you consider upgrades (like 2" focuser, mounting rings, etc.) the price of 80ST gets closer to a used 80mm ED scope. I found used Onyx 80ED on CloudyNights and can't be happier. It punches well above it's size on all kinds of targets, compact and super lightweight. Very sharp. Now it is one of the most used scopes. Even from home I often skip heavier rigs since it is so easy to just grab it and go.The Happy Parrot wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2019 9:54 pm You hit the nail right on the head Bigzmey. Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Thanks Michael and THP! The mount is Universal Astronomics MicroStar mount. It is a great portable mount. It weights under 3 lb but rated to 10lb. In my hands it handled up to 120mm short tube refractors no problem. As you see it also fits with the Onyx in carry-on Pelican case. Photo tripod (I use Slik Pro 700DX) goes into suitcase.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Chiming in a bit late here but I have a Celestron XLT102 F/ 6.4 I use it for solar, it does show some CA in DSO but for solar I have taken most of my really nice images with it. I tricked it out a bit replacing the focuser with a GSO dual speed and added rings to it. It is nice and light and easy to put on a mount, for grab and go I use a starseeker IV goto mount and it is really nice on it.
I just upgraded that part of my arsenal to a Lunt ED102f/ 7 and that is a really nice piece of glass, really sharp on the sun.
Here is my XLT102

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Thank you Ben. You are not late at all and the suggested Omni 102 on the Starseeker goto mount is precisely the sort of combination I've been pondering though not specifically for solar.

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
Just as extra information, there is a aftermarket goto kit available for the CG -4, you have to order it from UK though.
Unless you are planning on looking at mostly bright objects an ED refractor is really not necessary when starting out.
The 102mm f6.5 is a good wide fieldDSO telescope where CA will normally not be an issue anyways and CA can be controlled to a certain degree by filtering as well.
The 102mmf/ 9.8 will give better planetary views and the CA is again filterable to a certain degree if needed.
Some people can easily ignoreCA and others see it everywhere...

Re: 102SLT vs. Omni 102
One of the best low priced ED doublets in the 100mm size is the Skywatcher 100EDPro,
Excellent views though it isf/ 9 so a bit longer than the usually f/ 7 of most of these.
Excellent views though it is
