Astro Trivia Quiz for February

#1

Post by Raymondhow »

Greetings again TSSers, here's a new Trivia Quiz:
https://forms.gle/7VWXq1du2RVuYZrs6

For the short answer questions, spelling does not matter. I will adjust scores for misspelled answers.
Remember:
1. No online research allowed, your own pure brain only!
2. On multiple choice questions, feel free to guess. You may get lucky!
3. If you have a comment about a question, please do NOT give away the correct answer.
4. Please do not repeat the quiz, at least not until after I announce the Champs sometime next week.

Enjoy!

Yeah, well, probably shouldn't do these as soon as I get up, 5/20.

All my guesses were wrong, can't believe I got the Moon one wrong! But even if you took out the regionally biased last question my score would still have been poor! I'm going back to school!

Good quiz Raymond.

Regards

Graeme

Ditto, 8/20 but I'll get one back for spelling so 9/20. The three pointers are brutal! It would be a lot easier if it was an open book test!

Difficult, but fun anyway,

I like the way you make these both enjoyable and painful at the same time, Raymond

8/20, 9/20 if I get the credit for a slightly misspelled word...

Looking forward to the March quiz!

All the best,
Mark

Gfamily
Hurrah!

Answers, stats, comments…

1. Where was the above photograph taken?
Chile, 7/12 correct. The Big Dipper is upside down near the horizon, which means that Polaris is way below, which can only be from deep in the southern hemisphere.

2. Of all the planets in the Solar System, Mars is closest in size to Earth.
False, 10/12 correct. Venus is the planet closest in size to Earth.

3. Which main belt asteroid regularly brightens to naked-eye visibility?
Vesta, 5/12 correct. Most said Ceres which is the largest asteroid, but Vesta comes closer and has a much higher albedo. Vesta will be at opposition early next month, passing near to the star Theta Leonis.

4. Name a device whose primary shape is a segment of one sixth of a circle, used to measure positions of stars for navigation.
Sextant, 12/12 correct.

5. About what time does the third quarter Moon rise?
Midnight, 7/12 correct.

6. Name the substance with chemical formula NH3 that forms ice clouds in a layer of Jupiter's atmosphere.
Ammonia, 9/12 correct. I would have accepted hydrogen nitride, but nobody came up with that.

7. Which spacecraft mission was the first to successfully return images from the surface of another planet?
Venera 9, 4/12 correct. Soviet craft that soft-landed on Venus in 1975 and operated for 53 minutes.

8. Today (February 9, 2021), which planet of the Solar System is closest to the Earth?
Mercury, 1/12 correct. I like to ask this now and then. Mercury is now between us and the Sun.

9. Which one of these constellations does NOT share a border with Canis Major?
Orion, 1/12 correct. Almost half answered Columba.

10. From mid-northern latitudes, which month of the year is most favorable for completing a Messier Marathon?
March, 7/12 correct. Never tried a Marathon..

11. Which astronomer discovered two of the first four known asteroids?
Olbers, 0/12 correct.

12. Which UHF television channel was never used, in order to prevent interference with radio astronomy? (two digit number)
37, 1/12 correct. How’s that for a toughie? Had that question in my stash since last summer..

Feedback, comments, etc.
Your questions are northen hemisphere and USA biased !
Hey, the image was from Chile, and the spacecraft answer was Soviet!
