Astro Trivia Quiz!

Hello guys,
Been a long time since posting on the old AF. I see some friends are still here on this new board. Hope all are well!

As some of you know I am the outreach coordinator for my local club, the Eastbay Astronomical Society. Of course, with the Covid-19 problems there is no normal outreach going on, probably won't be for some time yet. Instead, I have been composing and posting Astro Trivia Quizzes, which many in the club have found entertaining.

And so for your consideration, amusement and education, I humbly present my latest quiz! Survey Monkey link below...
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YPP6W8S

Remember, NO ONLINE RESEARCH ALLOWED, and no books. Your own pure brain only. But feel free to guess, you may get lucky!

After a few days, I will go over answers, provide statistics, and announce the TSS Champion!

Enjoy!

I think I took this on your email to the EAS membership Ray. I'll give it another shot.

I got 13 points out of the 16 possible. Missed the year question.

Hi Michael, good to see ya! That's right, you are also an EAS member. Feel free to give it another shot, however I can't let you be the TSS Champion since seeing the answers already would give you an unfair advantage :Police:

That's right. My memory was hazy, but the results must be taken with an asterisk. (I'm out of the running)

I ended up with 9/16, and a few of those were a lucky guess, trust me

Fun survey, thanks!

ditto and ditto, so I feel I'm in good company
Am not sure whether my answer to the the Alpha Centauri B question was a guess or not.

Thanks all for participating!

Okay, we have a total of 12 responses, not counting Michael (Helicon). He tied for best on TSS, but he can't be Champion because he was a repeat customer on this quiz.

The nine questions scored a total of 16 points.
Average score for TSS: 8.3 points = 52%. That's better than the average of 104 other responses from my astro club and regional mailing list, which was 7.2 = 45%.

And now.. (drum roll please) here is your Champion!
Gfamily scored 13 point = 81%, missing only one 3-point question

Hurrah Hurrah!

Answers, stats, comments…

1. Which Solar System object lost its official status as a planet in 2006? (1)
Pluto, 11/12 correct.  Someone skipped this one for some reason.

2. The most southerly circle of Earth latitude from which the Sun can be seen directly overhead is called the Tropic of: (1)
Capricorn, 10/12 correct.  Both wrong answers were Cancer.

3. Which “law” states a direct correlation between the distance to a galaxy and its recessional velocity, as determined by the “redshift”? (1)
Hubble’s Law, 11/12 correct.  Someone answered Kepler’s Law.

4. The mirror segments of the James Webb Space Telescope will have which polygonal shape? (1)
Hexagon, 10/12 correct.  Will be an exciting scope indeed!

5. As observed from Earth, which planet has the greatest synodic period? (2)
Mars, 3/12 correct.  Surprised that so many missed this.  At least now we all know what a synodic period is, eh?

6. In the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, what phrase did the character Helen speak to the robot Gort, which caused Gort to desist from destroying the Earth? (2)
Klaatu Barada Nikto, 10/12 correct.  Please stop, Gort! was chosen by 2 of you, I have no comment.  The other phrases were from Elvish, Pig Latin and Klingon.

7. Which was the first star to have its angular diameter measured? (2)
Betelgeuse, 11/12 correct.  Welcome back to full brightness!

8. In what year was the above measurement first made? (3)
1920, 1/12 correct. Was that a lucky guess?

9. Which is the official name for the B component of Alpha Centauri? (3)
Toliman, 2/12 correct.  Perhaps lucky guesses?  Was wondering how to make a penalty for guessing, like subtracting for wrong answers.  But hmmm… maybe luck is part of the fun?  Opinions welcome.

Thanks again all for playing along!  I will post another quiz next month J

Thanks for the Quiz.
The one I didn't get was the date of the measurement of Betelgeuse.
There were two I wasn't sure about: the Day the Earth Stood Still question, and the Name for Alpha Cen B. For those, I thought I recognised the answers (in that I wouldn't have got them if it wasn't Multiple Choice), and they turned out to be correct...

As for the others, I guess it just means I spend far too much time on astro sites on the internet :)

I'll keep an eye out for the next one :Astronomer1:

You're welcome! Yeah, multiple choice makes questions easier, and adds an element of luck. On my printed quizzes, I often use fill-in-the-blank questions, but Survey Monkey won't score those.

Spending too much time on astro sites... yes, that's mostly what I do to compose a quiz. That and reading old S&T that I have lying around...
