Hello and welcome to the October 2021 Edition of "Brett's Carbon Star Hunt". I hope that everyone is having a good autumn or spring, depending on where you are!

I recently joined a local astronomy club which also has membership in the Astro League, so I picked up the AL Carbon Star Program booklet. While I have been using their list all along, it will give a little more info on the stars, etc. I also plan on, eventually, submitting for their program completion, etc. So we will see how that goes! I've already learned that not all Carbon Star's are red - this month's targets has a white one - every once in-a-while, I will throw a curve ball!

Anyway, on to the targets for this month!

HD 26 (SAO 109003) +8.2 - 8.3
Not a variable star, so nothing in the AAVSO.

From SkySafari: HD 26 is a 8th magnitude Star appearing in the constellation Pisces. It is 1091 light years from our solar system. It is a orange giant of spectral type G5:III:CH. Its surface temperature is 5050 Kelvins - 12% cooler than the Sun's - and it is 10.4 times the Sun's diameter in size. This star's total energy output, or luminosity, is 63 times the Sun's, and it has a mass of 1.1 Solar masses.

AL note: No apparent color - appears mostly white with a possible yellow tinge.

HD 223392 (SAO 128396) +8.5 - 8.8
Also not a variable.

From SkySafari: HD 223392 is a 8th magnitude Star appearing in the constellation Pisces. It is 843 light years from our solar system. It is a orange-red giant of spectral type C-R3- III C2 4 CH3.5. Its energy output is 27 times the Sun's luminosity.

AL Note: Light reddish-orange in color

CY Cyg +7.9 - 8.4
Data: https://www.aavso.org/vsx/index.php?vie ... &oid=11045

Observations: https://app.aavso.org/webobs/results/?s ... _types=vis
{There's one observation in there, from August 2019.}

From SkySafari:
CY Cygni is a 8th magnitude Variable Star appearing in the constellation Cygnus. It is 398 light years from our solar system. It is a red star of spectral type M2p. Its energy output is 5.8 times the Sun's luminosity.

AL Note: Yellowish-Orange in color.

Thanks for that Brett.

We have clear skies forecast here for tonight. I'll get my sexy new binoculars out to see If I can spot these three.

Whilst my star chart book is still put away in the loft, I tried inverting a Stellarium screen dump to print for the September Challenge. But the print out was a tad poor! I'll take the laptop out with me for this one!

Regards

Graeme

The first two are both in Pisces, and are very close to each other, so hopefully you can get them both at the same time.

Thanks for this Brett. I also have a good evening weather forecast for the next couple of days. Hopefully I can take a crack at some of them!

Well the two in Pisces were behind my house! But CY Cyg was almost at the zenith and with Deneb as a place marker in the same field of view, the location was easy to find! CY Cyg was not though! I know I was looking directly at it as I had Stellerium turned down dim on a laptop on a table next to me. I could see the V formed by 55 Cyg, the 4 stars above and the one below. I would like to think I caught a glimpse but it was probably just wishful thinking!

56 Cyg, in the same view, is the left eye of the Pelican, so I had a look at him for a while!

Not hugely successful for spotting carbon stars but lots of fun looking!

Thanks Brett.

Graeme

At least you got out there Graeme, and that's what make is fun. :) Hopefully you can try again later in the month!

I'll be getting the telescope back out the loft soon. If I leave it till Pisces is to the South NINA will find them for me!

Well it turns out that a hugely oversampled planetary camera is not the way forward when looking for individual stars! I found CY Cygni but at this field of view, HD 223392 and HD 26 returned too few stars to plate solve, so I couldn't confirm.

V CY Cyg.jpg

Sitting close to Deneb, in the band of the milky way Cy Cyg was able to plate solve. But for some reason, NINA saved the image as a monochrome tiff, so the colour was lost! This is 10 x 20 second subs stacked in PI WBPP.

After catching a few videos of Jupiter, the 95% humidity brought an end to the proceedings. Not a great success on the Carbon Hunt Quest but lots of fun nonetheless! I'm going to put the 1600MM back in and have another go.
