Interesting article on optical design for cameras and telescopes at the University of Ottawa. Will telescopes be much shorter than current designs?

I wonder how much light does it "eat" compared to conventional systems?
I guess aberrations are corrected in a similar way as in conventional systems?

Absorption losses are a question not addressed in the paper, unless my quick skim missed it. I wonder if there's not a possibility of new aberrations?

As it turns out, the article WP linked envisions application of the spaceplate with conventional lenses (and more compact systems) and with a metalens for an almost flat optical system. It's early days, but I'm eager to see some real world applications. I imagine phone cameras with decent telescopic capabilities might be among the earliest applications.

Some how a piece of paper does not inspire me like a refractor pointing towards the sky does. ;)

Absolutely fascinating.

This is clearly state-of-the-art optical technology .

It’s interesting to contemplate where this might lead in the near future
