My info is sparse but I have a chance to buy a 127mm f5 home made refractor with a Jaegers achro lens in like new condition. Anyone know much about or have tried / owned a Jaegers lens ? It comes with a CG-4 mount and all the other necessities for $600 C incl shipping.

From my reading the early lens sets were good but there was a continuing change of staff and optical quality became a roll of the dice.
Here is a comment from a owner on CN (second last posting):

A possible alternative? 152mm f/6.5 instead of 127mm f/5 though

I already have a 127mm, f6.6 but I am thinking of a 2nd scope for my remote camp where skies are Bortle 1, SQM-L 22.05 most nites.I will be mounting it on a Vixen Porta II as I am not an EQ guy. The 152mm would be a little big. Thanx though.

I don't know how you use a 5" refractor on a Vixen Porta mount, but maybe as long as you use low powers.
Where achros are concerned, I use the following chart:

I have that chart but I don't follow it just use as a general guide. At low / med. powers not a big problem, at higher powers, up to a point, the Porta is manageable. Luckily I am not a high power observer in most cases. I am looking for a larger AZ mount, not an EQ lover. CA is a non issue in my observations.

Some fairly inexpensive upgrades from the Vixen Porta Mount:
Stellarvue M2C
Explore Scientific Twilight-II mount (now discontinued--have to find a used one)
Losmandy AZ-8
Tele Vue Gibralter HD-5
Explore Scientific U-mount
Vixen AP alt/Az mount
Desert Sky DSV-2
There are a lot of more expensive mounts, of course, going from the Disc-Mount prices to Rowan to all the way up to 10-Micron mounts
But the above are a LOT better mounts than the Vixen Porta, yet still affordable.
