AP Processing Challenge No. 6 - Comet C/2020 F3 Neowise

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Welcome to:

AP Processing Challenge No. 6

This time it's the turn of Gcisko. Greg has submitted his capture of Comet C/2020 F3 Neowise. There were a lot of great images of Neowise on the forum but few with the level of detail that Greg managed to capture.

"My "Comet NEOWISE w/Ion tail" image is the TIF file straight out of a Sequator stack of 92 lights, 40 darks, & 20 flats. So it would be interesting to see if others can duplicate or improve on my attempt. I am fairly new at this. The TIFF Is about 135MB."

Just click the link above to download and process using your preferred software. Then post an image of your results with a description of your methods for discussion. Or just join the discussion with helpful tips, comments or questions. AP Processing Challenge No. 6 starts today and ends on the 15th September.

Please keep the submissions coming in for future challenges. Just send a PM or email a cloud storage download link to:

tssapchallenge@theskysearchers.com

Have fun!

Regards

Graeme

The images were captured with a SonyA7 in prime focus, on an Astrotech 72mmED, using a Star Adventurer mount. This resulted in a Full Frame image of the comet using the equivalent of a 432mm telephoto lens.

The camera settings were, ISO-2000, 2.5 Second exposure. The dark and flat frames were taken the next day.

Good luck and please let me know if there are any other questions.

I had a go. In PS I removed about half of the noise in Lab colour mode, was left with lots of large scale noise so saved and went to Gimp. With wavelet denoise most of the large scale noise disappeared.

Back in PS I cropped the image, reduced the magenta in the shadows and with Topaz denoise I got rid of as much of the remaining noise as I could. Again I was left with large scale noise, but since it looked like large detail I applied Topaz Detail to lessen it. The stars had suffered a bit from the earlier noise removal, but through strengthening the small details they came back again.

Topaz adjust emphasised the midtones and the blacks, bringing out a brightness gradient toward the end of the tail. I removed the gradient by multiplying with a grey to white gradient and masked the spots where it wasn't needed.

This is what came out:

That's a fine go at it Ruud.

Is there a wavelet denoise function in Gimp?

Looks like you have uncovered a satellite trail in the tail!

Hi Graeme,

it's not a very good attempt, but I am willing to learn.

About gimp: if you search gimp for denoise, 'Wavelets' is the first thing that comes up.

Darktable is gimp's raw editor but can also be run by itself. It has several denoise modules, like Raw Denoise, Non-local means Denoise, Bilateral Denoise filter and Profiled Denoise. I think it also has a Denoise Equalizer, but I can't find it. Too many modules! This equalizer is a wavelet filter that both enhances or suppresses detail of varies sizes and removes noise of various sizes.

G'MIC is a filter set for gimp and has Banding Denoise, Pixel Denoise and five different noise reduction filters by Iain Fergusson, who really wants to get rid of noise. Iain denoise 2019 shows how much fine, middle and coarse noise there is and to what extent it will be reduced. It might have worked better than gimp's native wavelet denoise.

If you like wavelets: G'MIC also has a Smooth Wavelets filter and one called Samj Antialias Wavelets.

I'm trying to learn gimp + darktable with G'MIC, and want to say goodbye to Adobe. Apart from a few portraits and landscapes I don't do much else with photoshop than repair old paintings for use as wallpapers. Astrophotography processing is a very different discipline!

Here's a repaired painting:
Vernet_The_Shipwreck_1772-4k.zip
(13.95 MiB) Downloaded 152 times
It was full of cracks and many flecks of paint had come off. It looks much better now. I can't yet do this in gimp in the same time with the same result.

Bye!

Cheers Ruud, I shall look into these modules.

Great painting, other than the odd looking lightening bolt!

Being a solar-head for so long, I've forgotten the little I ever knew about things that go bump in the night.:) That said, I was so impressed with Greg's capture that I had to give it a try.

This was mostly (85%?) processed in Photoshop... Camera Raw (ACR) for most of the general HSL adjustments came first. Since there wasn't much noise in Greg's image, I only needed to run a quick pass through AI Clear in Topaz. Then back to PS for some Curves adjustments, mostly in the Blue channel.

For my final adjustments, I went to my old PS favorite... Selective Color "Neutrals" for a little polish.

Since Greg captured the "extra" ionized tail, I really backed off of a lot of adjustments so as to keep it visible. I was tempted to use a little PS Dodge on it, but decided it would make the feature too bright when compared to the actual "tail" of the comet. Because we lose brightness when posting on the web, the extra "tail" is pretty faint, but it's there.:)

Thanks to Greg for such a great capture and the TSS staff for the challenges.

Very nice! Thanks much for taking time away from Solar imaging to try it out. I will say that I did "dodge" the image to enhance the Ion tail. Also I noticed (because I was looking for it) that the second satellite streak showed up in your image. It is in the middle of the tail. For reference here is a link to the original processed image. I thought it may be helpful in case it was missed when I posted it earlier this month.

Greg, I too noticed that streak, but decided to leave it alone, as I knew it was likely a satellite vice an artifact.:)

Glad you did John!

That's impressive how you have brightened the comet and ion tail and also darkened the background sky.

Hi all I had an attempt with Gregs data and I starting using deepskycolurs to get the colours correct.I the used anstronomy tools by using the deep noise reduction and enhancement of deepsky objects.I then used Affinity and used noise reduction using the filters and then finally used the clarity to make a bit clearer.I ended up with this image after I finished all the processing.
