Could we please have all future submission submitted in the .tif format this will make it easier for all to participate! After all, we want beginners to participate and I would bet that most have not heard of, let alone seen a .fit/.fts file.

Here's a link to a tif image of Bob's Iris Nebula. I opened the fts in Gimp and exported as a tif image. See if this is more sucessfull.

That's really good Bob. Startools has done a great job there. You have the brightness and the colour of the Iris and the dark dust too! Did you have to adjust the setting much?

Here's my go using Startools:

Crop
AutoDev
Bin
Colour

I'm happy with the colours but my sharpening/denoise skills need honing!

Thank you, Graeme,

The .tif you uploaded works just fine. It is so strange about the .fts file. I also got ImageMagick open it and convert it to whatever other file formats I chose, but it was ALWAYS in grayscale color space and I couldn't change that. There must be something going on with my Win10 that is mucking this up because it just makes no sense.

Thanks again,
JT

Much thanks to Bob and Graeme for getting a copy that my system was able to use. This challenge took me right up to the edge of my abilities. It could be better, but it is the current level of my incompetence.

As threatened ( :) ) I had another go at the data too. Having seen what everyone had been able to bring out dust-wise my goal was to get some dust to show while controlling the red and the mottling as much as possible. Here is what I got.
Challenge No 5 - BobHarmony - NGC7023 - Iris Nebula ST PS.jpg
I started with StarTools and the rough process was:

Bin 50%
Autodev
Crop
Wipe
Autodev (redo global stretch with ROI and ignoring fine detail
HDR
Deconvolution
Color
Life
Denoise
Color (reducing red bias)

Then on to Photoshop for some levels
Color balance (moved red/cyan toward the cyan side)
Brightness/Contrast (reduced brightness and increased contrast
Curves ( a slight S-curve tweak)
Flatten image
Noise Ninja to reduce the color noise

It's getting closer to where I want it, starting to get a little too smooth. More data might help overcome some of the deficiencies.

Graeme - this is very nice. I would suggest that you be less fearful of the noise reduction algorithm. I used to be very cautious about it but have found over time that StarTools is very good at preserving detail in the face of some pretty high initial grain removal settings. It has to be some of Ivo's "Signal Tracking" magic that I haven't quite wrapped my head around yet, but taht produces great results in general.

I suspect it was stacked in something like APP. I get the same thing with a fits viewing on images stacked in APP. Once the stack is saved in the .fits format the viewer stops viewing. Plunk the data (fits stack) right into your edit program, no further looking necessary. If your processing program of choice won't open a fits file well that's a discussion you have to have with the authors of that program. Just sayin'!

Actually this was stacked with DeepSkyStacker. As stated earlier, I chose the fits format for output as StarTools handles that format well as an input, but balks at the compressed tiff file DSS puts out by default. Hope this helps.

It opened fine for me in GIMP 2.10.20. And I got this image sort of quickly. Maybe too quickly. I couldn't understand the black void around the nebula. After reading all the other topic posts, it seems I processed out all the cool dust! YIKES. I'll go back and try again.

OK I have been working on it more. Mostly using Photoshop, Topaz Studios, and Astronomy Tools Action Set. It is a real challenge to get the dust and keep out the noise. Here is my second attempt and a crop view of the center of the nebula.

Here are the same 2 images, only this time I ran Astronomy Tools Action Set "Space Noise Reduction". It does smooth out the noise I think.

That's brilliant Greg. That Astronomy Tools Action Set "Space Noise Reduction" does a grand job! The clarity in the Iris is really nice.

Thanks! I saw a previous post where someone used a separate layer to mask out the dust to adjust only that part. So I did the same thing. The mask of the Iris has a 30 pixel feather. That way I did the "Space Noise Reduction" adjustment on everything except the Iris. Otherwise the Iris would have lost sharpness - which was a problem for a while.

Here is a short explanation of what I did.

GIMP - I opened the FTS file with GIMP 2.10.20 and did a EXPORT AS -> TIFF then started editing in Photoshop. I may have adjusted the LEVELS in GIMP before doing the export to tiff.

LEVELS - All of the color was added/adjusted via the LEVELS function in Photoshop. I did not make any adjustments with COLOR BALANCE.

CURVES - I also did a few CURVES - LIGHTEN preset adjustments after LEVELS, then LEVELS again. Then finished up with Astronomy Tools Action Set. But that was about it.

SHADOWS/HIGHLIGHT - this is something good to try as well.

Well, here's what happened when I tried to play with it.
First off, I have only done AP with the Sun/Moon, so any processing from me would be, well, bad... But I ran into the same thing JT did.

I downloaded the file, and first opened it with Gimp, as it was the only thing I had that reads it. It opened... in greyscale. And as you can see in the colors tab, the options are limited.
Image2.jpg

Next I tried PhotoShop. Well, that didn't work, so a google search led me to this FITS Liberator program you folks have mentioned. I did not know a thing about that; neat stuff. Anyways, installed it, opened Bobs file, and got the same thing JT did, where the three planes are black and white. I have no idea what a plane even is; at least not in this

Alright, I saved it as a TIFF file so I could give it a whirl with PhotoShop. Open it, and this is what it showed; i'm assuming Grey/16# is greyscale at 16 bit?
Image3.jpg

If I go to Image, then Mode, I can change it to whatever color is listed. But is that the way it should be?
Image4.jpg

That's my 2 cents, but again, I've never given this a go, so it might be something I'm doing wrong; or JT and I are just cursed  Maybe i'll try some of the files from the previous processing challenges and see how that goes :D

Have a good day all,
Mark

Thanks for the heads up David, and thanks Graeme for doing that. And also thanks to you Bob, for the file to play with. Oh, thank you too JT, for getting my interest up to see if I could duplicate your issue. Seems I could :D

All that said, I really haven't a clue, obviously  Maybe one day I'll read a primer on PS for AP. Still, it was fun to try.

Hi all this is my effort using adobe cs2 and affinity,I used the develop tool by altering the clarity, blackpoint, exposure, shadows.I used the curves tool in adobe cs2 on each point of the nebula to bring out the details. This is my attempt of Bobs image. Thanks for sharing and I used Graeme tiff file.
