I've had and enjoyed my Orion 12 goto SkyQuest Dob (with SynScan 4) for a few years now, and have not had any problems until I updated the SynScan...

It seems that Orion is slowly filling the holes in their beginner mount offerings.
A new EQ-3 (EQ-13), and the EQ-26 (EQ-5) with the workhorse SVP...

From the images on the website the castings look very clean so may be better than the average EQ-3 if they have done some decent QC on it.

It could be that the holding screw is inside the pier. You can unscrew 3 little screws located on the sides of the pier. They hold the top plate....
